My friend just named her new baby this. She texted me to tell me the news and the name.

How on earth do you say it?!

A

Blaa-nid

BLAW-nidh (d pronounced as a French D, now English) -- Irish equivalent of Flora/Florence/Fleur.

-- bláth = flower

Cool!

I was hoping it wasn't blarth-naid, which is what I originally thought.

thank you!

'now English' = 'not English'

A1980 · 09/10/2011 21:36

Ah now we have two choices so is it Blaa or blaw?

Very pretty meaning!

The fada (accent) on the a makes it AW by my books -- bear in mind though that trying to render an Irish word in English by spelling it out phonetically is a bit like like playing telephone. It's hard to replicate the sound this way, and I have no idea what sort of accent you may have on the other end either. So try and hear AW in my Irish accent in your head.

blaw(lon6)ned(short)

sqweegiebeckenheim · 09/10/2011 23:26

blaw ( although I've heard blaa used in the north)

Freaking hate that name!

Listzilla · 11/10/2011 15:44

In my experience (I married into a family of gaelgeoirí) it's sort of halfway between blaw and blaa, to rhyme with the o in odd. The shortened version, Bláth, is pronounced Blaw. Wouldn't want to make it too straightforward : )

mathanxiety · 12/10/2011 00:42

That is the sound I hear in my head, Listzilla.

In case it's not complicated enough already, I'd say Blon (as in drop the 'de' in 'blonde') -id. So 'blon-id'.

My friend pronounces it blaa- nid for her daughter ( Belfast)
