A lovely friend of mine just announced their babies birth on Facebook last night. I instantly spotted that it will have the initials TB and almost quipped back a joke about how she's a doctor and how amusing it was to have medical initials... But then I wondered if they didnt' realise... Can they not have done the intials test...?

Would you say something...?

Presumiably they love the name and wouldn't change it even if they hadn't realised...

TB, as in tuberculosis?

It's really not a problem. If you start ruling names out on that tenuous a basis, you'd never call a child anything. Plus, there's bound to be a middle name. Even if there's not - really, it's not a problem.

tammytoby · 03/10/2011 21:09

Why on earth would TB be odd Confused.

I'd feel differently if the initials were W.C, though Grin

gapants · 03/10/2011 21:11

TB-- The Bomb?

Would not occur to me that the initials would be weird/odd. say nothing.

DS has the initials ANC.

Before he was born and I told my dad the name I'd chosen he exclaimed, "Ohhh, that is short for the African National Congress, you can't call him that!!"

We live in Northern Ireland, are not African, don't know anyone in Africa so the ANC isn't really something that we dwell on.

When FIL came to hospital to see us after DS had been born he made the exact same comment as my dad.

I was Hmm

OP, the initials TB is nothing to get yourself in a tizz about.

seeksnewnamewithgsoh · 03/10/2011 21:59

I also wouldn't bother. I'm sure they've worked out what their own child's name and initials are.

FWIW my DH's initials are MS. And I've only just noticed the tenuous medical connection Blush

bushymcbush · 03/10/2011 22:09

Blimey! If such a tiny consideration matters to you, I wonder how you ever manage to choose your own dc names! Forget about it. Really.

bushymcbush · 03/10/2011 22:10

I did reject a name combo for dd that would have resulted in the initials EJAC though Blush

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 04/10/2011 06:11

EJAC. Grin

DS's initials spell MEC which, if you're really hunting for something, is short for meconium, but I think most people, even Mums probably don't really have that as part of their daily vocab.

DD's are HMC - we worried (very) briefly Grin about Her Majesty's Customs, but it's HMR&C these days.

Seriously - if you want to avoid literally every abbreviation and acronym out there, there won't be any names left to call your child.

FellatioNelson · 04/10/2011 06:31

I don't think it's much of an issue TBH. Now if it had been VD I would have thought they were a bit daft.

chandellina · 04/10/2011 12:19

get a grip! you can get something out of practically any initials. i'd be really "thankful" if a friend pointed it out - not

StetsonsAreCool · 04/10/2011 22:14

DD was almost DFS which we felt a teeny bit weird about, well, weird enough not to use an F middle name. Know too many BJs to be considered healthy thoguh Grin

KnitterNotTwitter · 05/10/2011 10:11

Thanks for all the comments - I suppose it was mostly because she's a doctor and TB being medical... But you're right, if they do realise they obviously don't mind and if they don't realise I won't be helping by pointing it out....

My initials are TB too and it honestly never occurred to me until now and nobody has ever commented on it either. It's no big deal at all - not like the initials are A.R.S.E....

BuntyPenfold · 05/10/2011 20:18

I know a boy whose initials are ADHD, that's what I call bad.
His parents are both teachers so I presume they think it is funny, he could easily have been AHDD after all.

spaghettina · 06/10/2011 15:44

TB 's not that bad. Certainly wouldn't comment, whatever the initials!
But then my daughter's initials of her first three names without surname are IRA. is that really bad? not going to change it now but I sometimes wonder if we were too careless, esp. as we had a couple of christening gifts engraved with "IRA"... but I figured most of the time she'd be using all her initials i.e. including surname.

TryLikingClarity · 06/10/2011 16:48

IRA where I live (in a Protestant part of Belfast) would not go down well. My dad would have a mental fit!

But, being rational about it, Ira is a male name, I've heard of a few American TV characters called Ira.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, especially as her surname will add a 4th letter to her initials.

spaghettina · 07/10/2011 15:34

Thanks for the reassurance, TLC!

kenobi · 07/10/2011 15:42

My brother's initials are TB and until this very second it hadn't even occured to be that it was like the disease or Toby Blair Smile. Don't think anyone except you will notice to be honest.

TryLikingClarity · 07/10/2011 16:32

By the way, my initials are TLC :) through marriage though, my maiden name began another letter.

So even if Spaghettina's DD or another child has 'odd' initials, they might well change in adulthood due to marriage or some other name change.

Fear not!!
