What do you think of Lorraine?

I'm pregnant and expecting a baby girl. DH really wants to name our DD Lorraine, after his mother who died. However, whilst I like the name I am a bit concerned that the name is a) a bit chavvy and b) a bit grannyish.

So over to you. What's your impression of the name?

I like the sentiment however the name is dreadful. might just think about it as a middle name but no way as a first name

I don't think it's chavvy or grannyish - but I do think it's very 70's along with Rachel/Jenny/Sarah etc

I can understand DH wanting to do it - but I don't think it's a nice name for a girl now. How about using it for her middle name?

I'd put it with Sharon/Tracey type 70s names.

Middle name material. Definitely 70s and in the Linda/Sharon/Tracey mould.

How about Lauren as an up to date alternative for a first name?

how random, i was just thinking about this name today!

I actually quite like it, but would be more tempted to go for Lori or Loren (as in Sophia Loren) instead, or have Lorraine as a middle name.

What about using the same initials as his mother but giving your new baby a name all of her own?

If he's that deadset on it, I would only use as a middle name as it's not very nice.

Lauren much nicer, I gave dd a 2nd middle name after a loved one that couldn't do as any earlier up the chain!

I know someone who named their baby Lorraine- just because they liked it and no family connection. I nearly choked and thought I had misheard. Not good for a first name.

It's my middle name and I've always disliked it, and I'm not even named after anyone (and not middle aged yet!) At least it has meaning if it's named after someone so then not as bad.

Not grannyish at all! My best friend at school was a Lorraine and I'm only 27. I'm not sure I've met many others to be fair but I'd definitely class it as 80s/90s in my head, def not for grannies.

I think it's ok. Don't like it especially but don't hate it either.

My name is a compromise between father's mother's and what my mum wanted, so it is possible. I like Lauren, and Laura.

I'm old enough that my first thought was "Luton airport".

It's not a name I particularly like myself, but there's nothing wrong with it IYSWIM.

I think thats its very much a name of its time rather than a classic name iyswim. It may have its time again but it isn't yet. I think either use it as a mn or like Norky try and find a compromise.

Lorraine is a nice lady in her 50s who works in accounts..... Not a baby girl!

Could you persuade your DH that it would be better as a middle name?

I agree that Lorraine is a bit middle-aged perm rather than granny chic, but there are loads of lovely derivative type names:

Lori
Lauren
Laura
Lara
Larissa

All lovely, I would agree with those who suggested Lori or Lauren as a first name, or use Lorraine as a middle name.
