Victoria - really torn

Some days I love it
Others I think it is just a blurgh.

Think part of it is that I don't really like Vicky as a nn and couldn't bring myself to ever call a DC Tori.

Help

Another Victoria here and I agree with QueenVictoria42 I didn't much like my name when I was younger but I love it now.
i am known as Victoria to some and Vicky to others. I'm not keen on being called Vic though.

I'm another Victoria. I hated it when I was younger (particularly during secondary school and with my long surname), but now thoroughly like it. It's mainly family who call me Victoria, almost everyone else knows me as Vic or Vics. It winds me up like a toy when strangers automatically shorten my name to Vicky, but, these days, I'm quite happy to say no, it's Victoria. I didn't realise Vita was a shortened form - damn, I like that.

BerylStreep · 03/10/2011 20:56

Vee is a nice choice if shortening.

CointreauVersial · 04/10/2011 12:55

Yes, it's irritating that the 11-year-old me has dictated the name I am now stuck with (Vicky). I'm too long in the tooth to change my name back to Victoria now.

Psammead · 04/10/2011 14:54

I am a Victoria. Mostly known as Victoria, or Vic. Very few people still call me Vicky from a brief period of teenage rebellion Grin

I love my name, but didn't always.

mimimomma · 04/10/2011 20:21

Wow...I'm the same as most of the other Victorias here. Went through a period of not liking my name in my late teens and asking to be called Vicky. Now cringe when called Vicky as nearly everyone else calls me Victoria, Vic or Vics. I love my name now. Strong and classic, due a revival.

Arrogantcat · 05/10/2011 00:10

I love the name Victoria. I considered it for DC2 but in the end was put off by the fact I knew everyone would shorten it to Vicky/Vix/Vic.

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 05/10/2011 01:54

Well, my parents always insisted on my full name being used, my Dad was quite vehement about it (it was his Mum's name), but I still got called Izzy (which I hate - way to ruin a perfectly nice name).

So, even if you insist in Victoria, you'll almost inevitably still get people calling her Vicky (which really isn't nice), since people just love to shorten names, whether the owner likes it or not.

Ultimately it will depend on your DD - if she doesn't mind Vicky, or isn't the type to insist, then she'll inevitably get Vicky.

exoticfruits · 05/10/2011 06:56

Exactly-you give the name and you have no control over it and you can't insist on anything. It will be entirely up to your DD and she may love Vicky, Vic, Tory etc.
My DS has a long name-I am just about the only person to always use it.

Toots33 · 09/10/2011 21:30

As a Victoria that hated the name growing up - I was incredibly grateful as I reached my late teens that I didnt have a 'faddy' name and was able to introduce myself with credibility at job interviews etc. I was called Vicky at school but as soon as I left for Uni it dropped and very few people ever refer to me as Vicky. I totally insist professionally that no-one use it and everyone respects that, I am a Vic, Victor, Tor Tor and sometimes Vee to various friends but never, ever Vicky :)

Montsti · 19/10/2011 11:55

I'm also a Victoria/Vicky/Vic/Vix. I don't love my name at all but it is classic and has many variations which is nice for different ages/times in your life...

I am surprised it hasn't come back into fashion (seems to be primarily 70s/80s children called it) - could it be the association with Victoria Beckham?Harsh but possibly true as she is not very popular is she? I personally think that if the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have a daughter it will be Victoria as it hasn't been used by the Royals for a long time...I think they'll have a George too for the same reason!

mumofbumblebea · 19/10/2011 12:07

love Victoria but really don't like any of the nn's. most of the little victoria's i know just go by their full name

Ephiny · 19/10/2011 12:47

I like Victoria, but really dislike Vicky as a nickname. Tori is good though, makes me think of Tori Amos (though I don't think she's actually a Victoria!). Vita is nice too.

Psammead · 19/10/2011 14:24

It's a brilliant name and I love being a Victoria!

StoneSoup · 19/10/2011 14:26

I know a grow up Victoria who is Vic. It has sort of become an 'official' name - she used it porofessionally, her work email is vic.bloggs etc. It has a slightly androgenous feel about it and I think it's fab.

Victoria is very pretty, btw

mrsshears · 19/10/2011 16:50

Love it! classic and underused

It is on my list with "tiggy" as a nn >>glares at anyone who steals tiggy

lurkinginthebackground · 19/10/2011 22:47

I like Victoria but don't like Vicky.
As a child I knew a Victoria and thought the name was fab then.

mythical · 27/10/2011 21:11

I have a friend called Victoria and she's known as either Toria or Victoria, i think it's a lovely name

SandStorm · 27/10/2011 21:27

I can see where you're coming from. I love the name Victoria but don't like Vicky. In the end we used it as a middle name as I couldn't guarantee it wouldn't be shortened.
