Do you say GrEta or Greeeter?

My Mum insists it's the latter, which has really put me off. It would never have occurred to me to pronounce it this way, but she is a German speaker, so perhaps that's the proper way of pronouncing it?

Also, what do you think of: Clara, Cassandra and Martha? Too popular?

In German it's more like Gray-te, but here I think you would get Gretter.

RitaMorgan · 18/09/2011 09:52

Sorry, should have been Gray-ta!

I love Clara and Martha, not keen on Cassandra personally. Don't think any of them are wildly popular.

Archip17 · 18/09/2011 09:54

I know a two year old, who's GrEta. And I think it's a beautiful (and still quite underused). I've never heard it said the other way, so that must be a German pronunciation.

From your other names, Clara is my favourite.

Have only ever heard GREta, DS (y7) has one in his class.
Don't know a single child with the other names.
I think all your choices are lovely, OP. And I especially like Cassandra. :)

privateprancer · 18/09/2011 11:53

I would say Greeeetah, and Gretter if it was spelt Gretta
Prefer Martha and Clara. I know one grown up Martha and one 4 year old, and no Claras. I love Cassie as a nn to Cassandra but not so keen on the full name. How about Kazia (prn Kaysha - polish origin I think)

HettyAmaretti · 18/09/2011 12:00

I think in german it's ofter a shortening of Margreeta (MAR-Greeeter) so mayby thats why.

SoupDragon · 18/09/2011 12:02

I use a short e, as in egg. So Gretta.

Around here there are tons of people called Greta-as-Greeta. I've never met a Greta-as-Gretta.

Janoschi · 18/09/2011 19:47

Second RitaMorgan with Gray-ta.

Hulababy · 18/09/2011 19:48

The child at my school with this name has her name pronounced gr-e-ta, with a short e sound.

Hulababy · 18/09/2011 19:49

Oh, and I love the name Martha

PublicHair · 18/09/2011 19:49

i would say gret-ta.
but clara is best of all (i have one!)

Flowerface · 18/09/2011 19:52

I love Clara, but DH is put off by the Mussolini connection (which is not what springs to mind when people hear it, if you ask me, but then he is a History Lecturer). And also Martha, but was worried that it was very popular these days.

I am slightly put off Greta by the pronounciation complexity. I have an Elsa and thought that was foolproof, but some people still call her 'Ailsa'...

The pronunciation thing is a language difference though - English speakers will say Gretta, German speakers will say Gray-ta, just as English speakers say Paula as Porla and German speakers say Powla.

RitaMorgan · 18/09/2011 20:11

I think Elsa and Greta are lovely together.

PublicHair · 18/09/2011 20:17

hmm, clara is also the name of Hitlers mother...

FWIW if ds had been a girl he'd have been an Elsa (to go with Kate and Clara!)
