What do you think? It seems in the same vein as Jessamy, Juniper and other botanical names. It's an old English name apparently meaning "of Britain".

Interresting reminds me of that potion Hermione uses in Harry Potter. I dont think its as pretty as the other flower herb names. Might be good as a middle name

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 16/09/2011 13:01

I like Betony, that's a wildflower I think.

usingapseudonym · 16/09/2011 13:03

I don't like it. Sounds like someone can't pronounce Britany.

sonniebonnie · 16/09/2011 13:06

Never heard of it, but don't see anything odd/wrong with it. Sounds feminine to me.

minipie · 16/09/2011 13:13

Mmm, I quite like Betony Elephants but it would probably get confused with Bethany.

Hmm well there's that lovely historian Bettany Hughes - she pulls it off alright. Far nicer than Bethany IMO.

Dittany is nice :)

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 16/09/2011 13:19

Also Tansy.

minipie · 16/09/2011 14:57

It makes me think of Paul Bettany too, which isn't necessarily a bad thing Smile

Not keen.

SybilBeddows · 16/09/2011 15:09

I think it's rather good actually.
I think it was a herb that was supposed to have magic powers, not sure what they were though.

Oh really, didn't know that about the Harry Potter thing. Hmm. I wonder how many children would be geeky enough about HP to know that .. ?

Probably all a bit academic though as I doubt my DH would ever agree to such an unusual name

I knew a Dittany who must be in her mid-30s by now.
She would always refuse to say where it came from when asked?!

I think nowadays it would be misheard as Britney/Brittany

HengshanRoad · 17/09/2011 05:35

Alternative spelling Ditney!

I really like Dittany actually. Although it has inklings of "litany" which is a bit ecclesiastical for my tastes.

"I wonder how many children would be geeky enough about HP to know that"

My 12 year old's entire social circle.

And Minerva would have been SUCH a nice name too Sad
