Dixie?

I know there is a band called the Dixie chicks
I know its pretty cutesy for a child
I know that it breaks tradition (massively)
I know I will (for the most part) get slated by you gorgeous lot

BUT

I love it
There is a Dr on telly who calls herself Pixie fgs (ok i know her real name is something like Bernadette)
Plus so many kids are being called Beetroot, Macintosh and MmmDanon now (possibly an over-exaggeration by me there) that surely by the time my little Dixie is at school, it will be positively boring?

Slate it/rate it... dont be afraid to be nice if you want to be ;)

To those of you who like it pls suggest Middle names (surname is one syllable beginning with G)

thanks in advance x

Speaks of slavery and fried chicken to me too. Not good.

Trixies nicer

Kirstle · 15/09/2011 12:30

Perhaps I am being naive to think that the bad associations with Southern America are something that is unlikely to come up where I live. As I mentioned before - I have never heard of most of these things, so I am doubting school children will have.

Again thanks for all the messages. I think perhaps it is a bit too nicknamey and dd2b should have something more formal.

Change. Your own name to Dixie if you like it and call your baby something sensible.

Zaft · 15/09/2011 12:40

Dixie was a button I used to press occasionally in music at school when I got bored of "demo". Also reminds me of American south. Beatrix/Trixie is gorgeous - I'd go with that if I were you.

brodanbell · 15/09/2011 13:05

With a name like Dixie I think you are giving her teenage peers a lot of very cruel and potentially hurtful nn's at a time when she will least need them.

I'd second others opinions in going for something like Beatrice/trix and shortening it to Trixie as at least then you still have the same sound.

PercyFilth · 15/09/2011 13:15

Isn't it some kind of saucepan?

BuntyPenfold · 15/09/2011 17:39

I am sorry to say I used to know a ghastly Dixie and when anyone wanted to annoy her they sang I wish I was in Dixie etc. This is Devon not the US and widely known here.
I do like Benedicta though. Beatrix/Trixie is nicer.

ExpensivePants · 15/09/2011 17:41

Agree with Seeker. Change your own name to Dixie if you like it so much. People do like to saddle their children with the most appalling names without a single thought for the child that has to live with it.

bluebump · 15/09/2011 17:42

I know of a teenage Dixie, i'm not that keen.

TheFlyingOnion · 15/09/2011 17:45

awful in every way

Lovethesea · 15/09/2011 20:41

Makes me think of the American South and the nastier bits of their history. And would be shortened to .... 'dicks'? by friends?

BedHog · 15/09/2011 20:50

Dixie was the name of Barbie's horse, the foal (not sure if daughter or younger sister) of Dallas, the palamino horse she could ride if you could prise her plastic legs wide enough to straddle him. Dixie was actually better designed as she had fixed legs, rather than the jointed ones Dallas had which caused it to collapse frequently, especially if Ken was in the saddle!

bumbums · 15/09/2011 20:51

Afraid to me it sounds like a dogs name.

NewbieT · 16/09/2011 12:37

I would automatically assume the family are Everton fans as Dixie Dean is a well-known Everton legend. Not necessarily a deal-breaker but thought I'd provide a footballing perspective!

Love the sound of it, personally, and reminds me of Elvis, which is always good (a line in 'American Trilogy' you could give it a listen on youtube OP?)

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 16/09/2011 14:09

In awe of BedHog's Barbie knowledge.

I quite like the sound of Dixie, but sadly it reminds me of slavery etc because of .

E.g.
"I wanna go back to Dixie
I wanna be a Dixie Pixie
And eat corn pone 'til it's comin' outta my ears
I wanna talk with southern gentlemen
And put my white sheet on again,
I ain't seen one good lynchin' in years.
The land of the boll weevil,
Where the laws are medieval,
Is callin' me to come and nevermore roam."

etc etc.

MamaLazarou · 16/09/2011 14:45

I like it.
