What version of Owen??

I'm Welsh/Irish so I'm in a bit of a pickle.
I know I want a type of Owen as DC name if a boy but what version/corresponding name - What do you think??

Owen
Owain ( said like Oh-wine - and the 'original' owen name)
Eoghan/ Eóghan
Eoin (I know it is John but the irish version is said like owen so I feel I could do it)

Owain definatly.

SpidersAndVinegaroons · 13/09/2011 01:43

I like the spelling Eoin, but I know quite a few people who use this spelling, and even some Irish people have trouble pronouncing this version. Owain is nice. The Irish for John is Sean, I think.

SheCutOffTheirTails · 13/09/2011 07:17

No, OP right, the older tradition is that Eoin is the Irish version of John.

I like Owain best.

Caveat: as long as you are sure if the pronunciation.

I'm Irish too, and love Welsh names. I wouldn't use one for fear of pronouncing it wrong.

Owen

blueberryink · 13/09/2011 09:48

I like Owain. (actually prefer the way it is said compared to how owen sounds)
Though Eoin is okay. Would you spell it with a fada on the i ? if yes I like the look of it better
yet I can't stand Eóghan

Aphria · 13/09/2011 09:50

Just wanted to add that Eoin is also pronounced as Ian in Scotland. I'm Scottish living in Ireland but would go for Eoin or Eoghan.

SheCutOffTheirTails · 13/09/2011 09:52

Eoín?

That would be pronounced Oh-ween

Terrible

Does anyone spell it like that?

SheCutOffTheirTails · 13/09/2011 09:54

Although, I suppose that spelling does have a narrow n sound at the end, so perhaps Oh-ween isn't that far out.

blueberryink · 13/09/2011 10:03

shecutoff two of my cousins are Eoín.

blueberryink · 13/09/2011 10:03

but without is definatly more common

SheCutOffTheirTails · 13/09/2011 10:09

Ah, thanks. Never seen that spelling before. :)

janeandmichaelbanks · 13/09/2011 10:54

Will DC have an obvious irish or welsh surname (eg an O' or Mc or something like Gruffydd, Rhydderch, Bevan) If so maybe have the oposite owen.
So with welsh surname have Eoin or Eoghan
With Irish one have Owain.

If not obvious then I like Eoin or Owain.

mayanna123 · 13/09/2011 16:46

I think Owen is the nicest.

jojomom · 13/09/2011 17:49

Owen

MelinaM · 13/09/2011 18:57

Owen. Owain is lovely, but I fear you would constantly be correctly the pro-nounciationSmile
