DH and I cannot agree on a girls name, boys names sorted. I like Isla for a girl, dh doesn't. he likes Penny, which is growing on me but wondered what the general consensus was?

thanks

Its Riley for a boy by the way, we already have a Max.

Blimey, Percy, that's hardcore.

There is, of course, absolutely nothing stopping a Penny from calling herself Penelope, should she be so inclined.

PercyFilth · 10/09/2011 10:40

It's not always that easy. People tend not to take children seriously. I remember trying to get people to call me by another name (let's say Elizabeth or Beth instead of Libby), but was either ignored or ridiculed. And it's hard to change unless you move into an environment where no one else knows you.

It shouldn't be about what the parents want, it should be about what will be better for the child. They are naming a person who will grow into a teenager then an adult, not a pet. I really cannot understand why some people think it unreasonable to give their children a name that has some options. Parents will always be able to use the name they prefer, so why be so inconsiderate?

oi percy, there is a pregnant woman at the other side of this thread reading the crap you are writing, she has already stated her dh is dyslexic. take your bitterness elsewhere.

OP I think Penny is a lovely name, I know a nice adult one, no idea if she is Penelope in full, I've only ever heard her called Penny (&fwiw she's very successful & taken seriously regardless of the cute name!)

purplepidjin · 10/09/2011 14:32

It's my name (couple of months off 30) and I don't see it as any more childish than Jenny/Jennifer!

Long version on the birth cert, I have only ever allowed people I can't stand to call me that version Wink

My parent's called me Nelly when I was tiny so they could talk about me without me knowing - I twigged aged about 3.5 ish!

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 11/09/2011 01:48

Percy for what it's worth, i agree with you (DS is known by a nn and has been since day 1 (it wasn't the plan, just happened) but has the full name on his BC), but just because your experience was a negative one, it doesn't follow that everyone in the same situation will feel the way you do.

I do agree that surely the default should be to give your child options, rather than deprive them - doesn't make sense not to to me - but I do actually know a Penny who is Penny on her BC and she managed to get into her late 30s just fine. Wink
