Youve probably seen me around asking this before, i was dead set and loved it goes with my other dcs names, but now im starting to waver and wondering whether i should just go for a more 'normal' everyday name.

I know family wont be keen thats is in the back on my mind saying that i have a Hugo and that was a grower as far as the family went.

Ah, I posed on your last thread. Still a "no" from me I think, because of the negative associations it has in the military.

Giles is better by far.

seeker · 08/09/2011 13:51

I agree. But ti's the person with the name that has to put up with the crap. And if you have a name that has very obvious associations of any sort, people will make the assumptions. For example when they see it on an qpplication form. People will think they know who Tarquin is. Just as they will think they know who Chardonnay or Rainbow or Jayden is. They shouldn't, it's wrong but they do.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 08/09/2011 13:57

Indeed, seeker.

Going back to my doubts - there are members of the Armed Forces called Rupert and I'm sure they're not all, ahem, Ruperts. We need an actual serviceperson here I think.

tammytoby · 08/09/2011 14:01

So the only way to get rid of these associations is if more non-posh people use 'posh' names then Smile?

TeacupTempest · 08/09/2011 14:24

I really like it but for some reason DH doesn't. He cant justify why though.

seeker · 08/09/2011 14:27

Good idea. Not sure if I want my child to be a fore runner, though!

scarlettlips · 08/09/2011 14:28

I really like it...good solid name!

As for the posh or not bit, names go across the board..don't worry about it.

PS. My DH is Army...never met a Rupert!!!!

evamummy · 08/09/2011 15:21

I think Rupert is lovely. Lots of names that used to be 'posh' are used by people of all classes nowadays - I know quite a very-non-posh Ruperts, Sebastians, Quentins, Hugos and Henrys for example (although I've never met a single Tarquin, posh or otherwise Hmm).

As others have said, better a posh name than a chav one!

FootballFriend · 08/09/2011 16:41

Please draw the line at Giles, though. Or Cecil.

sailorsgal · 08/09/2011 17:28

Rupert Penry Jones, Say no more. Grin

dh says it is an army officer name so was not keen for ds to have it.

I like it.

SecretSquirrell · 08/09/2011 17:34

Rupert Campbell_black is a rotten cad in Riders Grin

The only Rupert I know is a horse. All the horses I know have posh names Hmm, Toby, Hector, Rupert, Archie.

pointydog · 08/09/2011 17:38

AGree with seeker. That's what people do.

evamummy · 08/09/2011 22:03

Toby and Archie are posh names Hmm?

I have known two men called Giles, both absolutely lovely, and neither was in the least bit posh (not that it would have mattered if they were!). In fact I think its a great name just because they were both so nice :)

I also have met a Tarquin, again a nice bloke (though I knew him through his brother who - oddly - was called Jason, but in a Jason-and-the-Argonauts rather than a Jason-and-Kylie sort of way, I think).

Takver · 08/09/2011 22:35

And the only Rupert I ever knew had literally queues of women who wanted to sleep with him Grin

(Now wondering whether that would be a good thing when naming a baby boy, or not . . .)

Rivercat · 09/09/2011 07:41

never posted before but couldn't let this one pass - too tired last night though!

It depends what circles you move in
My BiL is a Rupert, military family who loved the name, went through public school, no one batted an eyelid. Now in his professional life (engineer) he comes into contact with all sections of society (building sites anyone?) and still gets reactions ranging from raised eyebrows and knowing looks to outright hilarity. Their kids friends routinely call him Rupert the Bear, adults ask where his yellow check trousers are! BiL has heard it all before, smiles a bit grimly and takes it on the chin. Though was nonplussed when a guy in the pub asked 'did your Mum and Dad not like you very much then?'

Depends too on how the person copes with having the piss taken. BiL is a great guy, people like him, so it is usually good natured and he takes it as such, though when DSiL has to call to him in a public place, they both still cringe a bit

sorry if it puts you off, just tellin' it like it is!

mopsyflopsy · 09/09/2011 10:25

We have a ds with a 'posh' name according to mumsnet. He goes to our local primary school, is very happy, popular and seems happy with his name. We're not British originally so don't really understand 'class' issues very well.

Reading some of these comments, especially the last one, I'm starting to wonder whether we should send our kids to school/university abroad, given some people's views about peoples' names. I wouldn't want them to get met with 'outright hilarity' just because of their name...?!

largeginandtonic · 09/09/2011 10:31

I love the name Rupert. I was desperate to call ds#4 Rupert but ex said no. He got my second favourite name instead...Hugo!

Anyway, a few more children on and and the dog has just been called Rupert. I just loved it too much to never use it.

Rufus also VERY cool.

pointydog · 09/09/2011 17:44

Lighten up, mopsy. It's only a name.

Gluttondressedaslamb · 09/09/2011 17:57

Years ago I had a schoolfriend whose younger brother was a Rupert, at home his nn was Poo. I never asked if that was because of digestive problems or just a pronunciation thingy - he was only 3 at the time !

CultureMix · 11/09/2011 09:42

I know an adult Rupert, and he does actually come from a very posh family - works but doesn't have to. That said he's a nice chap and I do like the name, it's different but classic, also suits an adult well (one of my key criteria for names actually).

DessieLou · 11/09/2011 10:03

threecurrantbuns you clearly need a good talking to! Ignore all this posh nonsense, I LOVE LOVE LOVE Rupert but can't use it so I would be very upset if you didn't! Smile

threecurrantbuns · 11/09/2011 10:10

Thanks everyone think I've snapped out of the doubt frame of mind. Classic but not over used is what I would like and I think Rupert would be both. Now I feel quite sure need to hope its a boy ;)

Otherwise back to the saying board :)
