What boys' names can be shortened to Finn?

DH has declared that he sort of doesn't mind the name Finn. This is a truly glowing endorsement as it is the only name he has chosen himself, and the first name out of hundreds that he hasn't made a face to.

Finn is ok, but I prefer longer names. What longer names can be shortened to Finn?

I have thought of

Finnion
Finlay
Finnegan

Finton
Finnius or should it be Phinneaus?

PeanutGallery · 01/09/2011 10:41

Finbar

Catsmamma · 01/09/2011 10:42

what is the obsession with long names that can be shortened?

Finn is a real name, go with it!

talkingnonsense · 01/09/2011 10:48

Dolphin!

LadyBoy · 01/09/2011 11:42

I love Finn! Longer names. . Griffin, Finbar, Fintan, Finnian, Finnegan, Finlay, Finlo, Phineas.

Psammead · 01/09/2011 11:43

Thanks - Finton and Finbar both great options!

Dolphin not so much Grin but it made me smile.

Catsmamma, well, I wouldn't call it an 'obsession', but to answer your question I think it's nice to give the child the option in the future of having a nickname or two. I did and I liked it.

Oh! Griffin is almost too awesome Grin

We would never have the guts.

I'll still run it past DH though Grin Although he considers Hector too 'out there'!

Finbar Saunders and his double entendres. I wouldn't. DS2 has a crocodile puppet by the name of Finton, so that would be out for me, but is a perfectly reasonable name in any other circumstances. Grin

Griffin is cool, but I think would more likely be shortened to Griff (which I also love, btw).

PeanutGallery · 01/09/2011 12:09

Griffin is fantastic.

(I say this as a normally conservative namer)

Go for it.

talkingnonsense · 01/09/2011 20:16

Grin was trying to think of names ending rather than starting with Finn, but got stuck! Both my dc were going to be Finlay, but they were blond and I think finns should be dark ( wierd i know)

pranma · 01/09/2011 21:12

My beautiful dgs is Finn withJames as mn when we want a long name we say Finn James but Finn on its own is lovely with the Finn McCuhl[sp?] legends to bak up.
Finn means fair tn!!

Allboxedin · 01/09/2011 21:15

I knew an old man called Michael Finnigan
He grew whiskers on his chinnigan
The wind came up and blew them in again
Poor old Michael Finnigan............beginnagain... Grin

Greenwing · 01/09/2011 21:25

Finlay/Finley is probably the best known and not exclusively Scottish any more.
I rather like Finbar - sounds quite strong but very Irish, as is Fintan.

BTW please, if you consider using the name Fintan, spell it 'an' which is the usual spelling. 'Finton' looks made up.

gitinora · 01/09/2011 21:38

I have a Finley who we call Finn all the time, we should have just called him Finn really but felt he should have a longer name at the time.

talkingnonsense · 02/09/2011 15:51

I know pranma! Its probably because I taught a gorgeous Findlay who was very dark and slight. My blond bald boys just didn't look like finns!

Xavielli · 02/09/2011 15:57

My Finn is just a Finn. I'd have called him Fintan if we wanted it longer. It was also the only name me and DP have ever agreed on for a boy... I really hope this one is a girl!!!!!!

DessertsInReverse · 02/09/2011 17:31

phinneas ?

DrCoconut · 02/09/2011 22:02

DS1 is Finn. It was almost unheard of here when he was born but I love it.

I think the majority of Finn's I've seen have been 'fair haired (warrior)' - mine definitely fits the bill!

Shanghai · 03/09/2011 07:21

Fiontan too - that's my son's name and he gets about 50/50 called Fiontan and Finn (think I may have just outed myself then..... quick - need to change my name!) - I love the name by the way

Claire2435 · 27/05/2025 20:27

Hey! I’m trying to write a book and J love Finn but would prefer a longer name. I loved Finlay/Finley but thought it was a bit too feminine. What are name that have their nickname as Finn????

NoVibrato · 27/05/2025 21:18

I grew up reading legends about Finn Mac Cool--almost certainly Anglicized version of the Irish name, but if Finn is good enough for one of the supreme heroes of Ireland (without additional syllables), it's good enough for me!

Wafflesandstrawberries · 27/05/2025 23:08

@NoVibrato Finn is an older spelling, not an anglicised one, or not only an anglicised one anyway.

It’s spelt Fionn today in Irish, which has varying pronunciations depending on dialect. It’s said as Fyun where I am in Ireland but as Finn in the north I think.
