Hello, just joined MN and am looking for some help naming my boys! Ideally we would like similar names but not rhyme-y or match-y, not massively popular but not obscure either. Some we already have in mind are -

Michael - is it popular with the younger generation?
Frank
Sid - don't like Sidney but is it okay on its own?
Stan - as above but don't like Stanley
Dexter
Caleb - nns?
Ned - could it be a name on its own?

What names do people think are nice as twinsets/do you have any other suggestions that could go with the names we have above? We would love the help as their arrival is imminent and we don't want them to be nameless forever!

Agree Ned not good in Scotland. It is synonymous with chav

autumngirl231 · 03/09/2011 22:34

Does anyone have any middle name suggestions?

I like Michael and Frank or Michael and Dexter.

Are any of them family names? I think you'd need to treat them equally in that respect.

I am not keen on giving a child an abbreviated name as their full name because "what's it short for?" is such a common question and, I don't know, it just seems a bit trendy to have called them just the abbreviated name. I am probably being old fashioned though!

I think Sid is become more popular.

autumngirl231 · 03/09/2011 22:38

None are family names, if we had any it would make the whole naming thing so much easier!

Not Oscar & Dexter together - you'll end up calling them Oxter & Dexster (or is that just me?? Grin).

Not Frank & Michael (Frank Spencer/Michael Crawford)

Sorry - not wildly keen on any of your names, I'm not a big fan of the 'old' names. I like some of the other suggestions though Luke/Finn/Zach

Dexifehatz · 03/09/2011 23:11

Ooh I have a Dexter -great choice! Elvis Costello has twin boys called Dexter and Frank I believe. Dexter and Stanley would be fab!

harrygracejessica · 03/09/2011 23:36

my twins are Elliot and Oliver :) Do you have any other children so their name go together??? Mine had to fit in with twin girls and a singleton name too so was very hard. I chose names we liked for first names and family names for middle names -Oliver has my dads first name as his middle name and Elliot has my nephews middle name for his middle name.

herecomesthsun · 04/09/2011 07:25

Of your list I like Michael and Frank best. Both are great, underused, classic names, similar in that way but not sounding alike, and are ones I would love to use myself.

notlettingthefearshow · 04/09/2011 07:30

Michael and Edward go well together.

If you can't think of any middle names, don't have any. It's not obligatory! I'm not having any for my kids.

Whatisitthistime · 04/09/2011 07:33

I like Frank and Stan.

BeaWheesht · 04/09/2011 07:36

I like caleb and dexter.

Maybe caleb alexander and dexter bartholemew ??? Tbh though I don't 'believe in' middle names unless there's a meaning behind them.

My suggestions would be elijah and reuben.

My imaginary twin boys are called fergus and darragh.

CornishMade · 04/09/2011 07:42

Frank and Stan = Frankenstein nicknames, sorry!
My imaginary twins are Dominic and William (Dom and Will).

mrswillywonka · 04/09/2011 08:37

I love Dexter and also love Edward, think they sound lovely together. Michael also works with both.

randomimposter · 04/09/2011 09:57

Caleb and Dexter from your list - Cal and Dex

I know one Michael under 4
Frank, Sid and especially Stan all quite popular where I am. I like Stan a lot actually.

Like Ned a lot as NN for Benedict BUT beware the Scottish isssshooo.

Other thoughts
Jerome and Benedict
Malachy and Rafferty
Gregory and Finnian
Joseph and William

Congratulations on twins - how lovely!

Thanks for all of the messages, they have been a great help! harrygracejessica we don't have any other children so this is all new to us. I should probably also point out that for Frank, Sid, Stan and Ned we would not be using any longer versions of the name as we like them how they are.

Calab and dexter

curlwur200 · 04/09/2011 16:31

How about Dexter Alexander and Stan Frederick?

MordechaiVanunu · 04/09/2011 18:54

From your list I'd go with Michael and Frank (but prefer Francis myself).
(Francis and Gregory great together).

My imaginary twin boys would be Hamish and Arthur.

saintmerryweather · 04/09/2011 20:54

Dexter is a dogs name. Personally I'd go for Michael and Edward (nn Ned) if you want more traditional names. I really don't like the name Reuben. But speaking as a twin, thank you for your son's sake for not giving them matching or rhyming names! It will help them grow up with seperate identities (as will not dressing them in the same outfits at the same time.)

saintmerryweather · 04/09/2011 20:55

oops meant caleb, not reuben!

cityangel · 04/09/2011 23:58

Otis & Callum
Hugo & Ellis
Eason & Mark
Jake & Luke

dreamer79 · 05/09/2011 11:14

I have a Dexter so might be a bit biast in saying that it is your best suggestion :o I also love Caleb (on own list as mn) and also Michael. So if it were me I would go with Dexter and Caleb (Dex and Cal is also v. cute!)

ragged · 05/09/2011 11:18

I have a Michael and it is a dead boring name (I have met many under 5).
But not as dull as Ned, imho.
I vote Caleb & Frank.
