What do you think? I can't find much about it on Google, don't know the meaning etc. But I like the way it sounds and the 'lo' sound could make for different nns (not just Ellie and specifically Lola, ahem).

As always, entertain me, be brutal! x

I really like it, never heard it before - sounds very ethereal!

pozzled · 27/08/2011 17:59

I like it, but it immediately makes me thinks of Eowyn from Lord of the Rings. Not sure if that's a bad thing, but you might get people commenting on it.

Kirstle · 27/08/2011 18:00

I've just found it spelt Elowen and the meaning is Elm Tree and it's apparently a Cornish name? Yes, although I was worried it might sound a bit Lord of the Rings? I think it's soo pretty though :)

Sounds very Lord of the Rings, with a bit of Welsh thrown in.

Did you make it up?

TrillianAstra · 27/08/2011 18:01

Well, I'm not the world's most masculine man
But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man
And so is Lola, L-L-Lola, L-L-Lola

toomuchpurple · 27/08/2011 18:04

Well I think this is right.
Elowen is a cornish name, meaning elm tree. So maybe it is just a different spelling of it. I would have done more of an o sound (like el-o-wan)

I like it.

Kirstle · 27/08/2011 18:04

Gosh Trillian- surely you're the first person in the World to make that connotation? - never heard it before yawn ;)

Ello-wyn? See, I don't know how to say it, so if you don't mind frequently correcting dullards like me...

iskra · 27/08/2011 18:09

I thought it was a boy's name?

Kirstle · 27/08/2011 18:10

TBH Ragged, I had never heard it before today either....so I'm assuming its Ello-wyn like you say, but I am happy to be corrected by anyone who has actually heard the name being used :)

Kirstle · 27/08/2011 18:11

hmmm deffo a girls name according to Google? Sounds more feminine than masculine imo...?

OP posts:
redheadbedhead · 27/08/2011 18:17

oooh I think it's gorgeous.

Kirstle · 27/08/2011 18:24

lol @ redhead - I think its so so pretty too

So of course, the next q is - middle names?

OP posts:
BadBuddha · 27/08/2011 19:19

Elwyn is a fairly popular 'traditional' masculine name in Wales. Never come across Elowyn as a girl's name but I like it.

acsec · 27/08/2011 19:25

Elowyn May
Elowyn Grace
Elowyn Sophie
Elowyn Kate

BedHog · 27/08/2011 19:33

My friend used Elowen for her baby's middle name. It's cornish and means elm tree. I presume Elowyn is an alternative spelling.

TangerineQueen · 27/08/2011 19:52

I thought LOTR too, so not the only one. Hardly the worst connection to make though, wasn't she really beautiful?

I actually really like it. Unusual but pronounceable. Love!

greenzebra · 27/08/2011 19:59

Beautiful name, one to be remembered if I heard it being used.

Reminds me of Olwen

Kirstle · 27/08/2011 20:17

Wow, so pleased it's getting such a positive repsponse on mumsnet. I saw it spelled Elowyn so assumed that was the 'normal' spelling. Wonder if Elowen 'looks' better?

OP posts:
acsec · 27/08/2011 20:24

No I like Elowyn as it's different.

DownyEmerald · 27/08/2011 20:25

Elowyn looks like Ello-win

Elowen looks like Ello - wen - which I think is nicer?

Like it btw.

redheadbedhead · 27/08/2011 20:31

Yeah you're lucky to get a good response to be honest, I started one about the name Lyra and the results were mixed to say the least, bordering on rude!

I like both spellings, but I think Elowen is a bit less LOTR and therefore I like it a bit better.

acsec · 27/08/2011 20:32

Oh redhead Lyra is one of my favourite names! It's on my list!!

redheadbedhead · 27/08/2011 20:34

yay you got good taste like me Wink Grin
