DC2 is due in a couple of months, and we are really struggling with boys names. We have our shortlist of girls names sorted, but boys names seem much more difficult as the majority seem to fall into one of the 'stereotypes' and that puts me off them.

Both DP and I have looked through enormous baby name books, websites etc., jotting down any names we don't hate. We've gradually whittled these down to the list below, some being my choices that DP thinks are OK, and vice versa. There isn't a single name that we both love, unfortunately.

The names are mostly on the unusual side, so apart from opinions, I am more interested in practicalities - are they a swear word in Spanish, or the name of some nasty gynaelogical disease, or the name of a foreign serial killer, for example?.

Soren

Asa

I know an Asa. He's a romany gypsy, horse dealer, in his 60s. Never ever made the arse connection though. I don't think anyone would dare.

The gypsy's often have old biblical names. Eli, Elijah, Amos, Noah and Asa are all common in the older generation.

lateatwork,
My mistake, but kalle anka - that is just wrong!
In denmark Anders is pronouned without the D so it is more like Anna's in pronounciation. But names are always going to be pronounced differently in different countries. I like that name jakob in English, but hate the way it is pronounced in Danish - Yakob, it makes me think of the sound of someone being sick. Also lots of people call me kell, but in danish that sounds like the name Keld which means keith -attractive for a woman I do not think!
I really like the name Rasmus, and know about three, although not in the UK.

Soren - pronounced as it is written in English or do you mean the Scandinavian name Søren (rhymes with blurrin')?

Soren - pronounced as it is written in English or do you mean the Scandinavian name Søren (rhymes with purrin')?

Likewise Asa... Ã…sa (pronounced awsa) - girls' name in Norway...

Ooops - doubled up!

I have a RUDY!!! (and I love Arlo).

I spell mine with a Y but my mum told everyone its with an I so everyone sends cards to Rudi Hmm

She also told everyone that my Asher was spelt Ascher before she asked me.

And she spells my Jadion, Jayden

No wonder my DCs are a bit confused Grin
