I am thinking of this name for hypothetical future dd. only idly. I love the sound of it and the nn Maggie. But is it a bit out there? Is there a connotation with the magdalene laundries?

Bit maudlin for my liking.

sebsmama · 20/08/2011 17:03

See and I did wonder if it should be pronounced maudlin like the college, but surely that's without the e....

...as in Mary? I don't like it I'm afraid, I do quite like Magdalena though!

GetOrfMoiCarbsClaire · 20/08/2011 17:04

I wouldn't know how to pronounce it, would it be maudlin, mag-da-lin, mag-da-lay-na or ma-da-lay-na

GetOrfMoiCarbsClaire · 20/08/2011 17:05

I would prefer Madalena

deemented · 20/08/2011 17:09

My first thought was the laundries/nuns.

Bandwithering · 20/08/2011 17:12

My first thought was the launderies to be honest.

Magda doesn't make me think of the launderies though

sebsmama · 20/08/2011 17:15

Quite like Magda actually it I don't think it goes with our surname. Love Margot also but I'm not sure if people will mispronounce it. Don't really like Madeleine, Maddy etc

Margot is lovely; not sure about Magdalene though, sorry.

MonsterBookOfTysons · 20/08/2011 17:29

My thought was also the laundries.
I like Magdalena aswell though.

wigglesrock · 20/08/2011 19:08

My first thought was in Mary. Much prefer Magdalena to Margot (but that may just be because I'm old enough to remember The Good Life.)

I agree its too closely linked with the Magdalene sisters. My DD1's middle name is actually Magdalene, after DH's lovely Great Aunt; but I don't think I could use it as a first name.

Interestingly the Oxford college is (as you all know) pronounced Maud-lin, but a mile or so away is Magdalen Road, pronounced Mag-da-len.

You could of course go with Madeleine, or even Madeline pronounced as in "The Eve of St Agnes" to rhyme with 'divine'.
