What do you think of Edwin?

My due date is tomorrow and I think we have finally found a boys name we both like for DC3. Girls name has been agreed for months, but we're really struggling for boys. We both like Edward but it is a little bit too popular in our circle of friends (we know 5 under 5s) and I'm not very keen on Edmund, but what do you think of Edwin?

Thanks

talkingnonsense · 19/08/2011 21:10

Sorry, I LOATHE it( you did ask), it's a smug, slimy name to me. Use Edward.

FellatioNelson · 19/08/2011 21:11

I don't like it. I can't imagine anyone called Edwin ever being nice, or attractive or likable. Sorry. Edward is fine though.

I don't like Edwin, sorry. But then I'm not keen on Edward either.

blinkineck · 19/08/2011 21:47

I really don't like Edwin. I think it's a really weak name. I've known two Edwins, neither of whom I have liked.

MelinaM · 19/08/2011 21:53

Love Edward and Edmund, Edwin is nice enough just not as nice as the other two namesSmile

Spagbolagain · 19/08/2011 21:55

I like Edgar better, but Edwin is nice. Will always leap into my mind as Edwin collins though

kampakat · 19/08/2011 22:00

I know an Edwin who's about 2...he is a proper gorgeous cherubic little chap...so it gets a yes from me!

Kayano · 19/08/2011 23:10

It's fil name but I love it

duckdodgers · 19/08/2011 23:14

Edwin, no sorry not great in my opinion, very old fashioned, I would expect to see it in an Enid Blyton novel.

pointydog · 19/08/2011 23:20

I love Edwyn Collins. And that would be enough to make me consider the name and think it's ok.

duckdodgers · 19/08/2011 23:22

I forgot about Edwyn Collins, yeh hes cool and back to health thankfullyGrin See the difference a spelling can make Grin

2tired2bewitty · 19/08/2011 23:27

My grandfather was Edwin and my brother is Edward, both lovely people.

pointydog · 19/08/2011 23:29

And Ed/Eddie are great names.

Papyrus · 19/08/2011 23:53

I prefer Edmund or Edward, but Edwin is fine.

KTisPG · 20/08/2011 19:20

Thanks everyone :o)

Go for Edward. It's a great name. Edwin seems like such a half way house. I don't really see the point if you both like Edward, just because there are other Edwards around......are you realistically going to still know them all in 20 years time? Why go for a half-option?

Clary · 20/08/2011 23:53

Edwin was my dad's name (he was quite nice, certainly never smug or slimy! Grin)

It's DS1's middle name and I really like it. Do know, tho, FWIW, that all your Edwards, Edwins and Edmunds will be Ed or Eddie by the time they are 9. All the ones I know are.

Panzee · 20/08/2011 23:54

Edwin Van De Sar. A great tribute to the man and his career. Go for it.

theworldspins · 20/08/2011 23:55

Sorry I really don't like Edwin and I don't know what it is about it though you could use the nn of Buzz which is cool.
But really with names like Edward they are always going to be popular, but they are induring names that will last

ChippingIn · 20/08/2011 23:57

So I assume the little fella hasn't made an appearance yet then?

Sorry, but I don't like Edwin - how about

Ollie (Oliver)
Charlie (Charles)
Freddie (Frederick)
Henry

Clary · 21/08/2011 00:06

It always amuses me when people say things like names like Edward will always be popular.

Really? Really? I know three Edwards in one year at primary (yr 6 so they are 11). I also know lots of other Eds of various primary ages. But I can think of one adult Ed I have ever met, and he was in his early 20s. Certainly none over 30. Apart from my dad of course but then he would be over 80 now.

I knew none at school. It just wasn't trendy then. Any more than Thomas, James, Matthew or any of the other "classic, dateless" names people often mention. Everyone at school (I am in my 40s) was called Steve, Stu, Dave, Martin, Mike, Paul. No 2 yo is called Martin or Stuart now. We thought they were dateless names I am sure.

Anyway. As you were.
