So is it pronounced:

On-ya
Awn-ya

or (as someone I know pronounces it, and it IS her own name...)

Oyn-ya

And I have a southern English/RP accent, so how would I say it so as not to get it wrong when speaking to an Irish person?

The pronunciation i know is On-ya. Her mother is Irish and father is Welsh

GooseyLoosey · 17/08/2011 15:00

The Irish ones I know seem to say Awnya

MissHonkover · 17/08/2011 15:48

The Northern Irish one I know says On-ya, so I copy that. Grin

MsChanandlerBong · 17/08/2011 17:30

I've only met one before, and she was On-ya.
I was quite young and naive when I met her (in my first job), so was glad that she introduced herself to me in person, as when I had read her name on the phone list I had presumed it was pronounced aaaiiiiin. Blush

pointydog · 17/08/2011 17:32

Depends on your accent

Bandwithering · 17/08/2011 17:59

The ones I've known have been Awnya. I like the sound of it but not the look of it written down.

tbh, i'd just go for Anya. Aine has a fada on it (somewhere) Confused

tammytoby · 17/08/2011 18:33

Isn't it French for donkey? And pronounced that way too...?

Bandwithering · 17/08/2011 18:50

is it? never knew that.

Bandwithering · 17/08/2011 18:52

put it in to google tools and played it, it sounds like Doodan

pointydog · 17/08/2011 19:13

french for donkey is ane. Not the same at all. That's like Anne.

Sausagesarenottheonlyfruit · 17/08/2011 19:20

It's a beautiful name but it would get pronounced to rhyme with 'pain' by english folk if they'd only ever seen it written down.

Tuschinski · 17/08/2011 19:36

My thinking is On-ya in the North of Ire Awn-ya in the South.

deburca · 17/08/2011 19:40

northern irish say on-ya, native gaelic speakers say awn-ya. its a gorgeous name, never met an aine i havent liked

emeraldislander · 18/08/2011 00:31

Your friend is closest to being right.

It's not really a sound that exists in English.

It's a name I would avoid unless you are an Irish speaker.

The Anya/Awnya thing for North/South is largely true.
