Is this too "out there" for a name?

Maverick.

It could be a boy or a girl, but this would suit either, right?

So much depends on the middle name too. Have you had any thoughts on that? Or are you leaving it as a lone?

piecederesistance · 06/08/2011 00:19

Maverick Strider Jones works, I think. But I may suggest Merrick Renegade to DH.

Only if he's going to be in the X-Men. Whats the special power going to be?

MadameLupino · 06/08/2011 00:24

Hmm, I think one strong name is probably enough. So Maverick ..... Jones - something simple and classic like John or Peter to go in the middle. Be careful with the initials though. I was going to suggest Bob but Renegade BJ - maybe not Grin.

I just want a name that can't be mistaken for anything else. We called DD1 Duende, which is a Spanish word which conveys passion in song, because I felt so moved to sing when I was pregnant. But so many people think I meant Wendy that it gets quite frustrating. Especially when she gets birthday cards to "Dwendy"- it just makes me think of Dwayne and footballers now, which is quite off-putting.

How about Mavrick Lupercal Jones? Trips off the tongue. You'd also get a lot of options for nicknames, shortening the name etc. Rick, Cal, Loopy.....

Jux · 06/08/2011 01:42

For a girl Amavrick Lupercalia Jones is great.

AlpinePony · 06/08/2011 07:38

It carries a lot of negativity.

Like naming your dog 'bastard'.

ifancyashandy · 06/08/2011 08:16

Hmm. But what if your child isn't a creative? And I speak as someone who generally likes unusual names. I know a Merrick. He's a model....!

exoticfruits · 06/08/2011 08:26

Are you just getting your own back on some of the sillier name threads?! Grin

SaffronCake · 06/08/2011 08:38

Is it too out-there?

In a word, yes.

RitaMorgan · 06/08/2011 08:46

This is a wind up Grin

Duende and Maverick? Do you actually like your children?

BitOfFun · 06/08/2011 09:56

Yeah yeah, ok, it was me Grin

A bit of a wind-up, yes- I'm thinking of slightly loopy character names for a story, and thought I'd road test them here. But Maverick Jones has really grown on me Grin

Jux · 06/08/2011 16:48

I think it would be great name for a character; some sort of action hero type, like, um, Indiana Jones...

(Still like Lupercal Jones though, but not for real life, she hastens to add)

exoticfruits · 06/08/2011 16:52

Great name for a story character.

Lonnie · 07/08/2011 01:53

i think it is ok for a boy but I wouldnt name a girl it

MorallyBankrupt · 08/08/2011 15:13

Yes.

LetThereBeRock · 08/08/2011 16:11

A definite no.It works for a horse but on a human it sounds like a porn star.

lisianthus · 08/08/2011 18:28

Makes me think of Sarah Palin. Sorry.

DELHI · 08/08/2011 18:46

it's flippin daft. After your experience with naming your DD Duede, I'd have thought you'd have more sense or even compassion...I pity the poor child if you call it Maverick. Sorry, but it makes me feel quite angry- parents indulging themselves at their child's expense

daimbardiva · 10/08/2011 13:00

My guinea pig was called Maverick, after Tom Cruise's Top Gun character.

I'd say no for a child

buttonmoon1985 · 12/08/2011 19:21

i like it its unusual without sounding chavvy or too stuck up go for it i do prefer it for a boy tho x

flissyfloss · 13/08/2011 20:33

I think in a creative family, you can get away with it. Not a big fan, but admire your confidence and ability to look beyong the ubiquitous Jack. Maybe it could have a toned down middle name in case he does end up quite shyly creative - like Bowie's Director son, as others have said.

somewherewest · 15/08/2011 17:59

Nooo!!!!!
Seriously, Maverick is tempting fate....he will probably grow up to be incredibly comformist (am visualising bank manager living in burbs and driving mid-21st century equivalent of Ford Focus). At least give him a really boring traditional second name he can switch to if he wants.

SayItLoud · 15/08/2011 18:04

I like it for a boy - and he could always choose to be Rick if he didn't live up to his name.
