What are peoples thoughts on Lalo?? nn Lo

Its the only name we found connected to Edward that wasn't a Ed...something.

What about Bear?

youmeupstrairsnow · 05/08/2011 13:35

minipie Can't really use surname as any DC me and DH have are having my surname anyway. His middle name is not usable - Packy can you imagine ?!?!?!

Themumsnot We will like this child :P so no - but thanks, it made me laugh Grin

I think Bear is sweet - but as a nn not a real name.

Packy I agree should probably be avoided!!

Why does "Ed" have to be avoided (is there already one in your DH's family?)

youmeupstrairsnow · 05/08/2011 14:01

minipie Bear can't really be short for anything apart from Edward/Teddy so that's out

There is an Edwin (Ed) on DH side (a DN and Uncle) and then my sort of DGD is an Elunded who for some reason known only to my friend (to the horror of his wife) gets called Eddy. (it's the DNand uncle that is stopping us not my DSG because her nn doesn't really come from her name so it wouldn't matter that much)

Just told DH about the middle name idea (as a joke) I think I may have killed him slightly, maybe not the best thing to suggest to a Brummie :P. Definatly wont be using that.

Eduardo - fabulous

Lalo - not good.

Bunbaker · 05/08/2011 14:16

Lalo reminds me of Layla or Lilo as in Lilo Lil from Bread. It doesn't sound like a boy's name at all and in the UK it would be cruel to give a boy a name that a) Sounds like a girl's name and b) Everyone is going to take the mickey out of.

Can't you put Eduardo on the birth certificate and call him Lalo?

youmeupstrairsnow · 05/08/2011 14:50

Thanks MadamDeathstare

Bunbaker good point but as some people haven't heard it (and if they have its Lalo Schriffin or they are/known spanish people) wouldn't they just go 'ohh' and leave it, it's not like it's a girls name as well and DC and us could just say it's a spanish Edward??? I don't know

evenlessnarkypuffin As i've already said. We may call him Lalo but Ed would creep in which we don't want. And it's after my dad who hated Edward and Eduardo is just too Edward-like. Also not really a fan of putting name on birth cert that we are never going to use and don't really like and plan from the of to call them something different (It is alright if a v.different nn evolves but not from the off- don't like it)

I like it and think that the -o ending makes it clearly masculine. Good point, madamedeath about every single name having been made up at some point.

There are enough little Eds around that I feel Lalo would make a nice change. And people will start to associate your lovely ds with the name, nothing else (especially as the name is quite rare in the UK).

evenlessnarkypuffin · 05/08/2011 15:36

Fair enough. I just thought it would offer emergency back up if people didn't respond well. Can I ask why you want to name him after your dad if your dad hated Edward? I've probably misunderstood.

evenlessnarkypuffin · 05/08/2011 15:37

Could you give him your Dad's surname as a middle name instead?

evenlessnarkypuffin · 05/08/2011 15:42

Ignore me, I've just reread the thread Blush

qwepoi · 05/08/2011 15:42

Sounds like a made up girl's name. Not a man's name.

evenlessnarkypuffin · 05/08/2011 15:43

OK. Did your father pick a confirmation name he liked?

youmeupstrairsnow · 05/08/2011 15:47

evenslessnarkypuffin My dad hated his full name Edward (so would never use that as name eg on birth cert) and as above we can't use Eddy nn Ed because of DN, DH uncle and my DGD. He died when I was 19 so I really want something related to his name in DC. But inkeeping with him (so no Ed-something)

As I explained to minipie above :'Can't really use surname as any DC me and DH have are having my surname anyway. His middle name is not usable - Packy can you imagine ?!?!?!'

Thanks

Whilst naming your son after your father is a lovely thought, given that he hated his own name so much it seems that you could widen things out a bit. If he were alive he (presumably) would discourage you from naming his grandson a named he loathed? What about giving him a different name associated with him - a family name (first or surname) from his side? Or a placename? Or after something else about him (e.g. if he was into carpentry you could call him Turner - that was how they did it in the old days, after all :))?

youmeupstrairsnow · 05/08/2011 16:11

Okay for those who aren't fans of Lalo (still in the running if you like it please please tell me)

evenslessnarkypuffin His parents and all my family are athiests - he wasn't even christened or anything. So that is a no no

Taken from ElephantsAndMiasmas

His middle name is really the only family name on his side - Packy (but read above)
His mum maiden name was Kennedy
He was a police man
A life long hard core Socialist
He was a Celtic fan (along with his family)
And all the places are all to Placey and really well known cities/towns eg Glasgow

If anyone gets inspired please share - I'm really stuck

I understand about wanting to name your boy in honour of your father, but I also think Lalo is a tricky one to use. It would seem to me that a great way of going about it is to use the naming of your son to honour something of your father that is not his name.

His job, his politics, his sport of choice, his mothers maiden name all tell us something about the man, but they also tell us nothing about him. You knew him, his soul, what he means to you and what of him you want to bring to your son, we just know what colour scarf he was wearing on a matchday. He was a city man, with a social view of the world, who served others... is that to say you felt he was a man who put himself into a bigger context and put others before or equal to his own interest? If so then perhaps that's the start for your name, something that to you reflects that, maybe Christopher (or Theresa for a girl) would if you were Christian (which I remember you're not). You get the idea though I hope?

Think wider. If your Dad was held up as a hero, which of his character qualities would it have been for. Find a name that really brings that alive for you.

KittyDeTour · 05/08/2011 17:01

Love it!!!!!! First thing I thought of was Lalo Shiffrin - great composer there. Also did the "Dirty Harry" theme tune. Go for it!!!! I think it is Latin and means to sing a lullaby. Perfect!

Oh SaffronCake you made me cry, thank you.

Packy is a fairly common nn for Patrick in Ireland.

Would you use Patrick (which is fairly Celtic) or Pádraic/Pádraig?

Or how about something to do with the politics -- Aneurin/ Nye, Keir, Ramsay, James (Larkin)
