I haven't met anyone who likes the name Ned yet...

I am thinking of naming dc3 who is going to be a boy - Ned. Most people I mention it to say a quiet 'oh' and say 'as in Ned the donkey?'

Am I pregnancy mad? I thought it was a nice sweet short name for a boy. I had lots of shortlists for dd1 and dd2 and no problem naming them. I'm finding boys name a tad trickier...

Where I grew up (Scotland) 'Ned' meant a sort of 'chav' (todays equivalent)

Malvapoeding · 04/08/2011 07:58

My godson is Edward - Ned for short, it suits him perfectly. There will always be someone who has something to say about the name you choose.

salander · 04/08/2011 07:58

I take it you don't live in Scotland. Or at least near Glasgow. It means something quite different up here!

hester · 04/08/2011 07:58

I like Ned.

How about Jed?

salander · 04/08/2011 07:59

X post!

EdithWeston · 04/08/2011 08:00

I think it's a lovely name too.

Cattleprod · 04/08/2011 08:02

You'll have to get him an Atomic Dustbin!

Reesie · 04/08/2011 08:07

Oh dear. The chav links have put me off... What on earth am I going to name this child? What do you all think of George? Would it abbreviate to anything?

I do. We will more then likely go with Edward if this one is a boy and Ned is my preferred nn. Not in Scotland but Scottish roots and couldn't give a toss!

tiredteddy · 04/08/2011 08:13

I know 2 neds age 7/8 in my ds class and they are both great kids with great names! Never heard of the chav thing from Scotland here in Surrey! Think it's a great name myself.

hester · 04/08/2011 08:14

George is very popular atm, if that is an issue for you.

How about Joe Smile

(My name suggestions always go down like a bucket of cold sick on these threads.)

mrswoodentop · 04/08/2011 08:17

I love the name Ned and really wanted to call ds3 Ned.Dh hated it though so it was a no no.I do like his eventual name which was also single syllable but also still regularly look at him and think he would have made a great Ned .

mrswoodentop · 04/08/2011 08:19

Have a nephew called George also a great name and not too many around,a good traditional name ,my potential Ned ended up a GuyWink

exoticfruits · 04/08/2011 08:25

I'm not surprised!
Edward is a lovely name and you could leave him to choose his own nickname.

exoticfruits · 04/08/2011 08:26

George is in the top ten for 2010!
Not that it should put you off if you like it.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 04/08/2011 08:28

In Surrey too so pretty immune from the Ned thing.

sockpoppet · 04/08/2011 08:34

I like it

hester · 04/08/2011 08:40

mrswoodentop - in my part of the world you can't move for the Georges!

Neds very thin on the ground, though.

hester · 04/08/2011 08:40

But quite a few Edwards.

BebeBelge · 04/08/2011 08:45

I'm afraid I would only ever associate it with 'chav' - grew up in NI & ScotlandSad . But my DH is an Edward and has always been known as Ed which I think is kind of laid back cool? If You love Ned though, go for it!

Catsu · 04/08/2011 08:57

Love ned.
I have an Edward who is called teddy but ned was close second choice for nn!

ellangirl · 04/08/2011 08:57

I like ted as a nn for Edward, I lived in glasgow for years, so I have the 'Glasgow neds' association too. Can't keep a straight face when my friend calls her Jake 'jakey' either. You could always think of Heath Ledger as Ned Kelly- a much nicer picture IMO Grin
