Sydney...?

For a girl? I'm not keen on it for a boy personally because, as a general rule, I don't like 'old fashioned' names, but somehow it feels more modern for a girl. I noticed that in the 2010 baby name stats there were 167 girl Sydneys but only 26 boys- has the y spelling become the accepted version for a girl? My grandad was called Sydney so it would be nice to commemorate him in some way :)
What does everyone think of it for a girl?

I'm not keen. It is a bit too like something the Beckhams would choose for my taste. I know a Sydney and her parents are a bit Beckhamish.

I like it for a girl. My friend has one, calls her Syd, I think it's cute. It was Annette Benings name in The American President wasn't it?

I like it for a girl and usually I don't like "place" names. It always reminds me of Jennifer Garner in Alias. It is a nice way to remember your grandfather.

Oh, it didn't even register to me that it was a city name too. That's something to consider. Thanks so far everyone :)

Isn?t Neve Campbell?s Scream character a Syndey? That?s the first thing that sprung to my mind. Also Cyd Charisse. I?m a bit mixed as to whether I actually like it. On one hand it reminds me a bit of the Taylor trend which I?m not keen on, but I think Syd, or Cyd, is quite cute.

I've come across a Sydnye (girl), and a Sidney (boy). I like it much better for a boy I'm afraid.

I know one, and I love it for a girl despite it being a city, whereas I would turn up my nose at Paris or London (even though Paris is also a Greek name) -- I like the sound of it. I think it sounds almost like a classic name.

I think it would be a lovely way to remember your grandad, and I think the Y spelling is used more for girls now.

Ummmmm...it is the name of the largest city in Australia and that would be the association everyone on my circle would make. Could make traveling a little awkward. Imagine if she went on a GAP year to Australia...

A middle name perhaps?
