Help! Suggestions for my little Pip!

We have done what everyone told us not to and gave the baby a nickname. When I found out I was pregnant, the baby was as big as an apple pip so we started calling it Pip and it has stuck.

And the thing is, I quite like it.

We don't know if we are having a boy or a girl but can anyone think of some names that aren't Phillip or Phillipa (or Phillip-related) that the nickname Pip could come from? I am rather stuck....

Penelope?

Persephone?

For boys I should think almost anything beginning with P you could get away with.

Girls
Piper/Pippa
Patricia
Paige??
Paula?
Tiwlip/Tulip
Miep

Boys
Pippin
Piper
Parker

Once you get rid of all the Philip names especially for boys it gets really hard

Peter. Lovely for a little boy and quite underused. Pip is a nice nn.

Piper for little lady is also very nice.

Another suggestion is using PIP from the initials of all the names. For example:
Paige Isabelle Piper Surname
Posy Isla Penelope surname

Peter Ian Patrick Surname
Phinneas Isaac Paul Surname

I'm sure you can think of better combos than me!

Oh and Peter

I went to school with a boy called Pip, his actual name was Paul.

I know loads of people whose nickname is nothing to do with their name.

For example I know a girl called Bean whose real name is Amelia. I suspect the origins of Bean are much like those of your Pip nickname.

I think call the baby a name you like and use Pip as a nickname. Doesn't matter if it's not related and doesn't start with P.

DS's nn is Tudge. Nothing remotely like his real name.

iklboo · 28/07/2011 19:42

And he was 'bumplestiltskin' when I was pregnant.

PebblesAndWine · 28/07/2011 20:24

Oh Peter is great, loving Pip as a nn for that.

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 28/07/2011 21:56

DS is called Ethan but is pickle as nn....

A bit out there, but in the first half of the twentieth century 'pip emma' was RAF radio speak for PM (as in the afternoon).

I read an Agatha Christie years ago with twins called Pip and Emma and it really took my fancy. Just as well I'm not having twins, really.

But as an unusual but justifiable nickname for Emma, it could just work.
