My maiden name as a boys middle name

Hi,

If we ever have a boy I would like to give him my maiden name as his middle name. What do you all think of it as an idea?!

Thanks

We've talked about this if we ever have a second ds. I always wanted to give ds1 my dad's first name as a middle name, but have less strong feelings about any subsequent children, so we'll likely look at my family tree and pick a suitable surname for his middle name.

You do know that there's no law that says a child has to have it's father's last name, don 't you?

CheerfulYank · 01/08/2011 04:46

I think it's a nice way to carry on family names, but of course I am a horrid American.

sweatybutslightlysmug · 01/08/2011 04:48

My surname is so awful that I would not wish it on anyone else. DH's is only marginally better. I kept mine, as I had had 30+ years to grow into it by the time I had DCs, but I wouldn't wish it on anyone else Smile. DCs have enough to deal with by inheriting DH's surname without having mine too Grin

One of my uncles got my granny's maiden name as his mn; my grandparents were neither Scottish nor American but Irish, and my uncle was born at least a century ago.

Funny how it's always women who have the ghastly last names that they can't wait to change when they marry - or are their brothers equally keen to get rid of their name on marriage too........?

CheerfulYank · 01/08/2011 07:43

I married into the last name Brick, and was so in love with the Paul Newman Cat on a Hot Tin Roof character by the same name that I changed it, Seeker . Otherwise I wouldn't have done, maybe. :)

seeker Interesting point. The only idea that comes to my mind is that girls may be more likely to either be or at least admit to being abused by their fathers and so connect to it negatively and are happy to get rid of it.

My brother would never in a million years admit to our father pushing him around, whereas my sister and I have discussed our abuse from him quite a bit (and our experiences were far harsher than his, at least those I witnessed).

seeker · 01/08/2011 11:34

I understand about shaking off the reminder of abuse, but I have heard aimed say soooooo often "oh, my family name was so awful -that's why I changed it when I married" that I do suspect post hoc rationalisation.

moonbells · 01/08/2011 15:23

I did have a school friend whose middle name was a family surname, which was also a boy's name. She hated it.

As you've noticed this is in fact very common historically as a way of passing on and acknowledging names from the female side of a family. It occurs frequently in the Victorian parts of my family tree, including one instance of the gloriously named George Lavender Yates. Fabulous! I wish that perhaps I'd thought a little harder about using my maiden name in my children's names somehow, given that I'm an only child with deceased parents. Go for it OP.

pookamoo · 01/08/2011 16:08

We did it for DD, and my maiden name is not "first name" like at all. We don't use it very often, but it does appear on her passport etc.

In fact, when we married, DH took it as an additional middle name and I kept it as a middle name (not double-barrelled iyswim).

NoTeaForMe · 02/08/2011 22:42

Lovely, well I think when/if we have a boy that's what we'll do! Before you ask why we won't do it for a girl it's because I feel it suits a boy better and we have other family members we want to acknowledge with a middle name for a girl.

Seeker of course I'm aware that the baby could have my maiden name as it's actual surname but considering I took my husbands surname when we married and my daughter has the same surname as us it would be odd to give any subsequent children my maiden name as their surname, don't you think?!

Thanks

My mum did for my brother, he doesnt like it as its barker and he used to get teased for it at school but i really like it and now hes older he doesnt get comments!

Leena78 · 04/08/2011 16:42

Great idea as it keeps a little family history in your children. I've passed my maiden name onto both my boys as a third name. They don't have to tell anyone if they don't want to.

ZZZenAgain · 04/08/2011 16:43

I think it is alright , depends on your name I suppose.

chandellina · 05/08/2011 11:55

My DS has my maiden name as middle name. It's conveniently enough a common boy's name though!
