Fionn or Finn? Websites have differing information! Thanks

I always thought Finn was the English way of pronouncing Fionn. Fionn being the name of the original Irish legend.
Could be wrong though Wink

Yes, Finn is the anglicised spelling of Fionn (pronunciation is the same, though)

Yes, Finn is the anglicised version but the pronunciations are different. Fionn is pronounced fyun here in Ireland while Finn is as it's spelled.

Thanks! On the website behind the name it says that Finn is the older version of Fionn. Confusing!

BTW whilst Finn (or Fin, Finlay, Finley, Finbar, Fintan, Finian) seems to be getting quite well known for boys, Fionn sounds and looks like a girls name to be eg Welsh girl's name Ffion or Fiona.

well this is an ancient thread but just to answer the question correctly...

...Finn is an older Gaelic/irish spelling. The name was originally spelled Find and Finn, back when it was a common name in Ireland. The "o" came in later.
