Giving surnames as first names is a long-standing tradition in the North East of England.

I don't like it much, but it's not new and it's not American.

lynn7300 · 23/07/2011 13:53

o no.......everyone is split......jack is just common hence jackson

we want a scottish name....and jackson is a scottish name and lochlan......plus our surname is douglass...so has to go with that

Are you Scottish? Will you pronounce it Lock-Lan or Loch (I can't type the crrrhh sound)-Lan, but I hope you know what I mean.

If it's the crrrhh sound then Lochlan, if not Jackson.

LisMcA · 23/07/2011 14:02

AFAIK Jackson isn't a Scottish name, I'm sorry. A qucik Google shows it's English in Origin

PeopleCallMeTricky · 23/07/2011 14:07

Jackson is awful imo, to me it seems so...unnecessary, why not Jack or any other first name instead of a surname? I would judge you I'm afraid Blush

Lachlan is better.

SpottyFrock · 23/07/2011 16:08

But lynn, if you want it go be Scottish you have to spell it Lachlan. It is not Scottish to spell it lochlan though as previously mentioned, I think in Ireland they spell it lochlann with the double n.

Bandwithering · 23/07/2011 19:03

I thought of Lochia too.

So Jackson.

ragged · 23/07/2011 19:27

I like Lochlan :).
How many people know what Lochia is?
(I just asked DH what Lochia is, he had no idea, we have 4 children, he attended all of their births!)

suzikettles · 23/07/2011 19:30

Is Jackson a Scottish name? Confused

I like it well enough, but prefer Lachlan - but only spelled like that. Sorry.

lynn7300 · 23/07/2011 19:51

well no one i have talked too have eve heard of lochia...so not too phased about that...looked on loads of baby names sites all say scottish.....

Lachlan or Jack

dear Lord not Jackson

BibiBelle · 23/07/2011 20:54

And please don't blame Jackson on us Scots Grin. There are many wonderful scottish names rather than using a surname.

Lochlan is not a name, Lachlan is and once again, more commonly a surname that is becoming more widely used as a first name. It is however LACHLAN not lochlan

birdofthenorth · 23/07/2011 21:49

I like both actually but I think Lochlan/ Lachlan is nicer- Scottish not American, very cute on a boy but distinguished on a bloke!

Bandwithering · 23/07/2011 22:03

anybody who's ever had a baby will have heard of lochia!!

Moanna · 24/07/2011 02:26

Not just a surname and Irish

Cherrypi · 24/07/2011 10:18

Jackson after the lovely Jackson Brodie from the Kate Atkinson novels.

Rhubarbgarden · 24/07/2011 10:53

I really don't like Jackson.

follyfoot · 24/07/2011 10:57

Lachlan sounds much more classy than Jackson

GwendolineMaryLacey · 24/07/2011 12:02

I have to say that I agree with Bibi. There are loads of wonderful Scottish names that would go great with your surname.

ShowOfHands · 24/07/2011 12:07

Lachlan, with that spelling.

I too can't abide this surname as forename business. And it will be shortened to Jack anyway. Every other boy is called Jack.

Lachlan, definitely Lachlan.

muminthemiddle · 24/07/2011 13:12

Lochlan or Lachlan.

exoticfruits · 24/07/2011 13:25

Jack

exoticfruits · 24/07/2011 13:26

Sorry -meant to say if you really like Jackson have it- but shorten to Jack (I would have Jack in the first place)

TidyDancer · 24/07/2011 13:28

Jackson is way better. Lochlan/Lachlan is a clumsy looking name. Sorry, but it's a horrible name to me! We have a Jackson in the family, great name!
