Caspar?

Or should it be Casper? Hubby has thrown this in at the last minute and I think I like it - would be Cass for most of the time I think. Is it masculine? Is it cool? Does it suit a grown man? Is it nicer than Nathaniel (currently agreed upon name)?

NB - Cassius is not an option. I can't get my head around the meaning. Plus my older son is called Jude and Jo Wiley has sons called Jude and Cassius - she is not someone I want people to think I am trying to emulate!

the friendly ghost... Thats probably not going to come up in his generation though :)

It's a lovely name - I prefer Casper.

MamaLazarou · 20/07/2011 19:37

I'd say Casper. Great name.

PaperBank · 20/07/2011 19:40

I like Caspar (prefer this spelling too).

Nathaniel also nice.

PotterWatch · 20/07/2011 19:43

I would spell it Casper, not a great name but each to their own Smile

ShowOfHands · 20/07/2011 19:46

Definitely Caspar.

It's a really flipping lovely name and I love Cas (NOT Cass which is short for Cassie in my head) as a nickname.

It's a lovely, traditional name.

perfectmummy · 20/07/2011 19:47

my little boy is called caspar! love it and people always comment on what a lovely name it is

GiraffeAHolic · 20/07/2011 19:47

I love Casper, suggested it to DH a few days ago to a resounding NO :(

WhipMeIndiana · 20/07/2011 19:49

or Cassion

or Crispin

Caspar is the friendly ghost and the character will endure as sooner or later there'll be another cartoon about it

ShowOfHands · 20/07/2011 20:08

A person becomes more than just a single association though.

Raphael is a turtle
Matilda a child prodigy
Betty a female superhero
Lola an annoying precocious oik or showgirl
Harry a boy wizard

But they're perfectly acceptable names and I'd happily use them.

And my first association with Caspar is the wise man. But all children transcend the associations with their names anyway. Caspar is a blooming brilliant name.

Maybe not Adolf though. It's been ruined by a dog I once knew.

MelinaM · 20/07/2011 20:10

Caspar is lovely.

pilates · 20/07/2011 20:11

Strongly dislike Caspar, nice name for a dog.

Nathaniel lovely name.

Not sure how pc it was for me to laugh at that, but I did - quite spectacularly given I had a mouthful of tea at the time!

I love this name, I used to talk to a guy a few years ago who was called Caspar. He loved his name and he was 18.

I mentioned it to DP the other week and got a no. :( We're going with Nathan although I would have loved to have used this!

WiiUnfit · 21/07/2011 11:13

pilates: "Strongly dislike Caspar, nice name for a dog."

Our dog is Casper, he is a white standard poodle. Grin

AlmaMartyr · 21/07/2011 11:18

I know a little Caspar, think it is a gorgeous name.

MetalSian · 21/07/2011 11:25

I suggested Casper for mu DS but my DP said no =[.
Maybe if we have another boy.

I like it with an e though =D.

Nightstar · 21/07/2011 17:32

Spelling depends who you are naming him after:

Caspar: One of the three wise men
Casper: The friendly ghost

I like it, but also worry that Cas is a bit feminine for a boys nn

freerangeeggs · 21/07/2011 18:17

Nightstar, I agree that Cas/Cass is quite soft and feminine sounding but I think that's a good thing. I love slightly androgynous names for boys.

I think Casper/Casper is gorgeous.

jasper · 21/07/2011 18:34

Caspar/ Casper.
Both stonkingly fabulous names.
As is Jasper Grin but my dh would not let me call our son Jasper which is why i have called myself Jasper on `mumsnet

BunnyP · 21/07/2011 19:27

Love Caspar. This is actually the name of our alpaca - the others are called Oscar and Cassius, and I would happily use these names if we had sons.

AnotherMuesliPleaseBarman · 21/07/2011 22:37

Caspar is a truly fab name, but then I'm biased! Wink. Works well for a cute little boy and a respectable man, too.

But preferably spelled the traditional way, not Casper as in ghost. Having said that, as far as I'm concerned, there's no reason why a not-even-especially-current cartoon character should have some kind of exclusivity on the name forever.

Love the idea of an alpaca with the name Grin
