Baby names

Romy- is it too much like a nickname? Plus other names...

I was after a few opinions on some names I am toying with.

I like the name Romy but I'm not sure whether it is a bit unsubstantial as a given name. Does it sound too nick name like to you? (I don't usually like nns as full names eg Milly, Tilly, etc which are quite the thing at present but I do like Romy) and do you like it?

Other names:
Nola
Calla
Plum
Hazel
I saw Viola on another thread and liked that a lot also.

Makes me think of tghe film Romy and Michelle's high school reunion-not altogether a bad thing.

I love Romily, I wanted it but it's been snagged by a friend already :( and they only ever call thier daughter Milly. Which is sad waste of damn fine name in my opinion, why did they have to snag Romily

Tony is a beautiful name, definitely the nicest of your list. I wanted to use it for dd2 but dd1 is Phoebe so we were a bit worried that people would think we had some kind of Lisa Kudrow obsession...

Ugh that was meant to say Romy, not Tony. Stupid iPhone.

Romy is a beautiful name in its own right, I suggested it to my sister when she was pregnant with my niece, she is now 9 and absolutely loves her name (and thanks her fabulous Auntie for it!) Grin

To answer thereisalight and yamayam - I pronounce it Ro-milly and Rom-y. I know some do pronounce it Rome-y (as they do in the movie Romy and Michelle).

Actually very stupid I pronounce it Rom-illy not Ro-milly (what was I thinking!!) Must go to bed and stop looking at baby name threads as no more children for me (or so DH say)!

Thank you so much for the feedback. I am surprised that it is so positive!
I do quite like Rosemary actually and I know what you mean re Isabella/ Sophia fatigue (although they are v pretty names).
I think Romy suits a little girl, sounds quite 'cool' for a teen and works for any adult as it is feminine and spunky, not overly pretty pretty. Isabella doesn't really work so well if you are a chunky, rugby playing type. You kind of have to be 'Bella'!

freya- how sweet that you helped to name your niece!

I love Romy also! it's on my list.

worried about the nickname thing too but I recently came across Romila. It's indian - Hindu I think - meaning heartfelt. I'm not sure I like it but being of Indian heritage, it seems fitting and I thought could use Romy as a nn.

However paerhaps romila is just not nice enough. not sure how its pronounced. Any thoughts on Romila?

Or there's Romola like the actress Romola Garai, too, for another alternative.

hazey- I think Romila (ROM-i-lah) is v pretty. I am actually part Indian and have an Auntie Romila.

thereisalight-I'm not sure about Romola. Do you know if it is Rom-OH-lah or ROM-oh-lah?

Overall, I like Rosemary/marie best as a fn but I love Romy alone too.

No - I'm not sure about it either - I think I've heard her pronounce it ROM-oh-lah.

Larry David has a daughter called Romy I believe.

It's on my shortlist but I think I'd have to go for Rosemary as a full name and use Romy as a nickname.

It's fairly common in German. I came across it through Romy Scheider. I also had Hedy as a name (Hedy Lamarr) but that has pronunciation issues.

Don't know why but Romilly makes my toes curl.

I do like Rosemary, otchayaniye. That would be my favourite full name possibility so far but I agree with most people that Romy is acceptable as a fn too. I think Romy is much prettier than Hedy myself.

Hadn't heard of Romille fifi but not sure I like it. I thought of Romaine but it sounds like a lettuce!
