Dh is set on Beatrice

I like Beatrice, but I'm not sure if it's 'The One', perhaps because of the nickname Bea being a bit short and plain... If she had to have a nickname, I prefer Betty or Beezus (Ramona's sister in the Beverley Cleary books), so I could live with Beatrice.

But I also quite like Daphne and Greta.

Do you have a preference out of these 3 names, or like none of them?

Thanks Smile

I like Beatrice, but Bea just reminds me of Bianca Jackson from Eastenders with them shouting 'B' at the top of their voices down the Market...

I don't know any though and have 2 kids so know lots of other little children.

Northernlurker · 09/07/2011 10:08

I have a Beatrice known as Bea and I think it is a lovely name. In terms of popularity it's just outside the top 100 atm (or was last time I looked). So it's not rare but you won't be falling over them. I don't know any others atm and that's with a circle of friends, nursery and school to go at.

DH's grandma was Beatrice (and SIL's DD has it as her middle name) DH's gran was always called Triss or Trissy.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 09/07/2011 11:31

I love Beatrice and love Bea even more but DH is not keen. Story of my life :(

BibiBelle · 09/07/2011 13:13

Beatrice is beautiful and has a brilliant meaning. I love the nn Bea too Smile

Greta sounds a tad too harsh for a baby for me and Daphne just makes me think of Scooby Doo!

Beamur · 09/07/2011 19:01

I've had nothing but good reactions to Beatrice/Bea, I thought it was fairly uncommon but there are a couple at her school - one of which is one of her favourite chums - which means they actually call each other by their full name all the time which is quite funny to hear.
DP wasn't keen on the Beatrix spelling although I like both.

lisianthus · 09/07/2011 19:08

Beatrice is a lovely name. Not so keen on the other two.

kando · 09/07/2011 19:10

I like Beatrice - only know of one little girl with the name but she's 7/8 now so maybe it's becoming more popular? Whenever I hear "Daphne" I always think of Daphne from Scooby Doo! I LOVE Greta, that is a really gorgeous name. Good luck with choosing!

Oakmaiden · 09/07/2011 19:10

My Grandma was a Greta. Although she was on the stage, and changed her name to Olga for some reason.

So I like Greta.

emsies · 09/07/2011 20:21

We're thinking of Beatrice too if its a girl - I just love the name. I loved Beatrix Potter as a child but prefer the "ice" sound.

BuntyPenfold · 09/07/2011 22:16

I love Beatrice and know one aged 6. Bee or Trixie for short.

proudfoot · 09/07/2011 22:39

Beatrice is lovely, by far the nicest of these 3. Greta is okay and Daphne is not nice.

pilates · 10/07/2011 21:37

Beatrice is pretty, the other two sound harsh and not nice.

Hedwig3 · 11/07/2011 20:12

Daphne is superb.

thecatatemygymsuit · 11/07/2011 20:23

Love them all, can't call it!
If pushed, Greta, Daphne, Beatrice

whizzyrocket · 12/07/2011 00:51

Daphne is fine, although it does make me think of my neighbour's fat labrador!

Beatrice is a beautiful name though- don't chastise your chap for thinking along those lines- he may suggest Jane next!

Bea is very lovely too. It has a simplicity and class to it that you don't get with many nick-names (I'm an Alice- you don't get nice shortened versions Ally or Al.. I'm secretly pleased my OH has decided to call me Bertie!). My sister Rebecca is often called Bea, which I have always loved. It saves her from all the horrid shortenings like Becks or Becky or worse, Becca! :S

dapperflapper · 06/08/2011 16:21

I have a 9-week old dd named Daphne - no regrets. People are often surprised but then say it's very sweet. I think it's definitely a grower and very rare = great! I love the fact it's also a beautifully scented shrub. Daphne is v gorgeous so will carry the name well Smile. Of the other 2 I prefer Greta as Beatrice is now so very conventional.

dapperflapper · 06/08/2011 16:31

and I think Daphne has the softest sweetest sound, like the breeze through the laurel trees Grin- not harsh at all plus looks great on paper.

That would be the clincher for me - kind of sums up the spirit of Daphne! Old-time elegance. Plus dd1 has the name of another of the perfume ranges

lchodge · 06/08/2011 16:49

Really don't like Beatrice, makes me think of beetroot and I hate the nn bea. Daphne sounds like daftie which is used a lot in Scotland! Greta is ok but a bit harsh.

SaffronCake · 07/08/2011 17:14

Daphne Beatrice goes quite well I think and putting a name in the middle means it doesn't get shortened, so you lose the complication of disliking Bea.

Greta Beatrice is do-able but Daphne works better I think.

ZZZenAgain · 07/08/2011 17:20

of those 3 I would probably choose Daphne but it isn't a name I like that much

lolajane2009 · 07/08/2011 18:20

I like it. The little one inside me would have been Beatrice if she had been a girl.

BikeRunSki · 07/08/2011 18:36

Of your 3 names, Beatrice is best by a mile.
