Not told anyone but....

.....our names are now officially sorted..........I think.

I did have a wobble earlier today due to an article being in a paper, but I think we're happy

Girl - Eidith Lily (Eidi for short)
Boy - Seth Lucas

I'm hoping that I should be safe from other children in the class having the same name........???

I give in :o

If she asks why I gave her a 'boring' spelling later on when its more popular then at least I'll have a story of why to tell her lol.

There aren't any other girls names, we're definitely going with Edith :) and Edi for short.......or is Edie better?? Just don't won't that pronounced as Eddy

Eidith is perfectly acceptable imo. You can pronounce the word 'either' as eyether or eether, in fact there's a comical song about the pronounciation. Also the words ending with an 'ie' tend to be pronounced eye (e.g: lie, pie, die etc) so where is the confusion? Conceive is pronounced with an ee sound and that's an ei written word.

OP if you love the name, use it. Once the kids in your DD to be (possibly) class hears the name they'll pronounce it the way you want. We have two Amaia's in DD year, one is an Amaya pronounciation the other Ameyea, also the same with Mia - same spelling different pronounciations. No one gets muddled, they just accept.

After all this you will probably get your little Seth which is also lovely and i only know of one so still pretty uncommon.

she may not want to shorten her name? I think that's a personailty thing - my Friend is called david, he is most def NOT Dave. DH is Matthew and never ever Matt

It may well be in the baby name books, but don't they mean 'pronounced eyedith'?

Edith isn't a boring spelling - it's the spelling. It never occured to me to ask my Mum why she didn't spell my name Kathyeerrrinee, because Katherine is a 'boring' way to spell it...

The extra 'i' does nothing, it doesn't change the prononciation (well it does, to something other than edith!) and it looks pretentious and irritating.

EricNorthmansMistressOfPotions · 08/07/2011 21:18

Edie is a nicer spelling than Edi. Edi doesn't look 'finished'.

OK, I saw your post and read it as Edith, then did a double take and thought...oh no, it's some Gaelic name and I haven't the faintest idea how to say it and the child will have to tell everyone. THAT I could accept because it's a language thing, but it's the other way round and I don't know why you'd do that to a perfectly lovely name.

Do you know anyone who has a bizarre spelling of a regular name who likes it? I don't.

Woohoo thank you LadyInPink :) That was exactly why I didn't see it as being a problem so have been quite taken aback by how everyone seems to think it is!! But fair enough.....

Maxybrown, no she may well not and that's fine as I love Eidith/Edith I just would never have a name where I then don't like the shortened version as it would be bound to happen.

I'm really surprised about the popularity of Seth..........but as we struggled so hard to find a name (until DH's book moment) I doubt that will change either. There aren't very many classic boys names that aren't very popular I don't think.......not that I could find/think of anyway.

On a completely different note...........I'm sitting here with 'period pains'......best not be labour, I'm not ready!! lol

Know no Seths. Know a lot of little Toms and Edwards, James and Williams, Max and Theos though. In my neck of the woods (London) most kids actually seem to have pretty standard names, with only a vvvvvery few Cosmo types around.
But, hang on, period pains you say? Hmmm. Look out for the delightfully named mucus plug. Make sure you post tomorrow if you're still here... :)

Not that Seth is like Cosmo - tho I do like both of these names...

Still here hightrees - got up and moved about and feels a bit better. I've still got 3wks to go so I doubt it very much but I'd rather the pain would completely go so I can be sure :)

See I like Theo but I think there are quite a few now, I don't think Seth has got as popular as that YET.

Seth is much nicer and less overused than Theo. I know four little Theos under age seven.

Go with Edith nn Edie. Edi looks odd. My Edie doesn't get called Eddie if that helps.

Pick names you really like. If Edith, don't do a made up version. In danger of chav'ness looking and anyway that extra ''i" alters the pronunciation of it.

If you want unpopular try Doreen. Not yet met a child under 15yrs of age called Doreen.

Greythorne · 09/07/2011 07:51

Eidith is a really odd spelling. I think you will not just be lumbering your putative DD with a lifetime of spelling her name, but also a lifetime of correcting pronunciation. She may not thank you, esp when there is a perfectly good and accepted spelling which everyone recognises.

Eedith is an uncommon way to spell Edith. It isn't right, but it is ucommon.
Eid is also a festival in Arabia, if you call your Eidith she could be mistaken for someone coming back from the hajj.
Call your DS Duncan or Adrian or Gavin. All normal names properly spelled.

I don't know anyone called Seth, Lucas or Edith (of any age).
Lily is very common, though I expect you knew that.
A lot of Muslim people will presume it's somehow Islamic, like someone said.
My first thought was that you said it like "Aye-dith" or "Ay-dith", or that it was Irish and therefore probably pronounced like "Smitzah" Wink. At any rate, I'd thoroughly butcher saying it more than once, knowing me.
My kids have boring conventional names with boring conventional spellings for a reason.

I love Edith-the only one I know is a beautiful Swiss teenager-please dont mess with the spelling.
Seth and Lucas are also lovely names I know a couple of little boys named Lucas but no Seths.

I tried googling "Eidith" - it said "do you mean Edith?"

It's nowhere near well enough established as a variant for you/your DD to escape the myriad assumptions (listed upthread) about it. In particular, the sight-rhyme with Heidi, and the established pronunciation of names such as Eileen, do support the "eye" pronunciation when people meet this name for the first time (and that will mean everyone, really). But I'm sure people (well most people) will be sufficiently polite and socially adept in RL that their reaction won't show. And perhaps by the time your DD is 40ish, this variant might become established (if enough people use it),

Edith BTW is a lovely name.
