Whaddya think?

We're looking for two-syllable names, for very complicated and pointless reasons.

There is a relative in our family who had two cats named Thomas and Tobin. I kid you not.

Agree with the posters saying the names should start with different letters. I'd prefer Thomas of the two. What other options would you consider? I'd suggest

Matthew (also biblical)
Adam
Edward (that way you could call them Tom and Ted but post and so on would be easier as one will be T and one E.)
Michael

God NOT Tobin. I thought of the killer too, immediately.

It's too recent.

Also - NOT same initial. Twee and makes them sound like a pair of guinea pigs!

fallingandlaughing · 25/06/2011 20:15

almost everyone I know would think Tobin = Serial Killer.

Also not great to have twin names starting with the same letter - sounds like they are a set iykwim.

cloudydays · 25/06/2011 22:45

I assume you already know that the meaning of the name Thomas is "twin"?

Of course that might be part of the appeal for some, but it might be off-putting to others, so just making sure that you know. :)

Anyway, it's a lovely name. I agree that Thomas and Tobin are too similar for twins though.

DioneTheDiabolist · 25/06/2011 22:50

Kenneth (or Thomas or Tobin if you like) and Psycho.

That's what I always wanted to call my twins. (Sadly I haven't got any, just one DS.) Go on. Just to see if names make a difference and report back each year the day after their birthday.

CarnivalBizarre · 25/06/2011 22:51

I know adult twins called Thomas and Timothy and I am forever calling them Timmas and Thomathy - can't help it, its a genuine slip of the tongue but they do not find it amusing Blush

Give your twins names that are individual to them, not names that are so similar that they identify them as twins, they will thank you for it later in life

I know a family who have 10 children whose first names all begin with J - very confusing indeed!!

tummytickler · 25/06/2011 22:52

Please don't use Tobin. Serial Killer comes to ming immediately.

Thomas and Toby or tobias would be better, but a different initial entirely would be best.

Isaac, Matthew, Gregory, Jack, Bertram, Michael, Joseph, Oliver, Henry, Victor.

AberdeenAngusina · 26/06/2011 12:37

Thomas is great, especially as it means "twin" but I also associate Tobin with the serial killer.

Also, is there not some suggestion he might be tried for other murders in the future? In which case, the name would be in the news all over again.

no. no no.

Cadmum · 26/06/2011 13:21

Too similar. The serial killer of the same name puts a negative spin on the name Tobin so I would change that one.

Looking at the thread, most people seem to agree...

Ihavewelliesbuttheyrenotgreen · 26/06/2011 13:31

Thomas and Tobin are too similar imo and then there is the serial killer connection. I think you need more of a classic name to go with Thomas. Love the suggestion of Edward so could be shortened to Ted if you wanted but would still have a different initial and the option to use Ed, Ned etc if he wanted to. Other names which go well with Thomas

Thomas and James
Thomas and Harry
Thomas and Samuel
Thomas and Oliver
Thomas and George
Thomas and Jacob

Too simelar. My twins have different intitals which i prefer. People still mix them up so it would be a nightmare with same initial.

freerangeeggs · 26/06/2011 18:44

Alliteration is fine, but might be a pain when opening mail (I used to work in a bank and this was a problem).

Tobin is a bad choice. Peter Tobin is a very well known serial killer and will probably be in the news for some time to come as they suspect he might be responsible for more murders than he has so far been charged with. Google it.

Toby, Tobias or Tobiah are all nicer

MissHonkover · 27/06/2011 14:02

Are you Irish? I like Tobín but I think if you're not Irish it's a bit of an odd choice.

Agree with everyone else that the same initial is too matchy-matchy.

WhatTheWhat · 02/07/2011 19:31

Wow - thanks!

This has been great. I kind of expected nicey nicey, but the comments are good 'n' honest.

I really like the suggestion of Thomas and Barnaby and yep, we do know Thomas means twin, but funnily enough, our singleton daughter would have been Thomas if she'd been a boy.

Apparently Barnaby means "son of consolation", which sounds nice to me.

I like Tobin nn Toby. If you were worried about bad connotations then you could use Tobias?

Toby and Theodore is lovely. As is Thomas and Theodore. Imo though, Timothy is a lovely name with it as well. Barnaby sounds fab too.

MissHonkover strangely the only two people I know called Tobin are most definately not Irish. One is of Indian Descent and the other has a chinese mother and an english father. I don't think it matters, look how many people are using 'Orlaith' (or 'Orla') atm. :)

mathanxiety · 03/07/2011 07:46

Yes Thomas, no Tobin. Thomas and Barnaby is really lovely.
