I love it. I don't know any, but it was in my top 3 for DD.

PippiLongBottom · 21/06/2011 13:34

I adored it but it means 'blind'. That put me off.

tammytoby · 21/06/2011 13:36

Unfortunately the meaning (derived from Latin meaning blind) would put me off. Nice name otherwise.

Bluebell123 · 21/06/2011 13:38

Beautiful name! I wouldnt worry about the meaning at all, you could easily put a positive spin on that .... Blind to prejudice, that kind of thing

Hedwig3 · 21/06/2011 14:06

If the meaning puts other people off, all the better Grin

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 21/06/2011 14:52

Like it, but it is a bit trendy.

Bonsoir · 21/06/2011 14:55

I think it's pretentious and not very pretty either.

Apphia · 21/06/2011 15:17

Love it. Top favourite should another dd come along.

Also like Cecelia but dd1 is Ophelia and is probably too similar sounding.

Sophiesmummie · 21/06/2011 15:41

I wouldn't want to burden my child with a name meaning blind. Yes, you can try to spin it in a positive way but given that there are so many other lovely names with much nicer meanings, I'd avoid it.

swanker · 21/06/2011 15:47

Love it- we were going to have Cecily Margot, but it was a boy.

MEBMotherof3 · 21/06/2011 16:24

Love it and haven't met any others. Or how about Cecilia (like the character in Ian McEwan's Atonement)? (love this book and have just re-read it!)

PrincessJenga · 21/06/2011 16:36

LOVE IT! It was top of my list if we were having a girl. I also like Cecilia, Verity, Felicity and all the other old fashioned (posh!) girls names!

RugbyWidow7 · 21/06/2011 18:36

I love it! It's on my list, just trying (so far unsuccessfully) to convince DH. How would you abbreviate it? Or wouldn't you?

Apphia · 21/06/2011 18:54

I know of a Cecelia shortened to Cece (see-see), I suppose that would work as an abbreviation.

MoChan · 21/06/2011 19:08

I don't think it's pretentious. I think it's pretty. But then, it's my daughter's name...

I honestly don't see why it's pretentious. For me, it's something of a family name (aunts/great aunts/great grandmothers called Cicely or Cecily) but I also just think it's pretty. And close to Cicely, which is the name of a herb. I didn't want to call her Cicely, although I really like it, because given the way people's minds work these days, I didn't want them thinking she was conceived in Sicily...

I knew about the meaning when I chose the name, but a) I don't think it really matters and b) I sort of think of her as being blind to any obstacles life might put in her way. Believe me, she is living up to part b). NOTHING and NOBODY gets in her way...

HTH

SloganLogan · 21/06/2011 19:09

Not keen on Cecily, but love Cecilia.

MoChan · 21/06/2011 19:10

Felicity was also in my top 3. I just think it's nice, and the meaning of that is 'nicer', I suppose, if that's what you are looking for.

5DollarShake · 22/06/2011 03:25

Not that keen on it, I know an adult one. I prefer Cecilia, I think.

Don't let the meaning put you off if you like it, though - why are people so literal about these things?! My name (which was deeply unfashionable when I was give it, but is now overly, overly popular) means 'devoted to God'. I don't think my parents read that as meaning I'd have to enter a nunnery when older. Grin
