Edie, Edith... too popular?

I will be having a little girl and quite like the name 'Edie'. Is it too popular? She'll be my first, and I don't know anyone with kids in the area to run it past... What does the wisdom of Mumsnet of say?

I love Edith. I don't know any little ones called it.

lemonandhoney · 20/06/2011 23:21

I know two Ediths and an Edie. Which I suppose makes it quite popular round these parts (north London) but if you like it, go for it.

manicinsomniac · 21/06/2011 00:11

Must be just starting to get popular I think.

I know of one Edith who must be 17 or so now and I remember doing a double take when I met her as a little 10 year old, it was such a bizarre name to be on a child then. But apparently plenty of babies and toddlers called it now.

It's hardly Grace or Lilly yet though, use it if you like it!

I don't know a single live one.
DH's dad, both his grandparents were George + Edie.

NotjustaMummy · 21/06/2011 14:19

Lovely. Not freakish, but she won't be one of millions at school. Might go and see if there are any other old lady names I can pinch too. Thanks!

I love Edie. I know 2. One is 3 and it's short for Edith, the other is 1 and just Edie.
I also love Ivy, Olive and Mabel.

razzlebathbone · 21/06/2011 21:13

My daughter is Edie. She's almost 4. I've never met another.

I don't think it'll get too popular. It's not as 'pretty' as Evie, Lily, Ruby etc.

Last time I checked I think it was outside the top 300. Don't know about Edith.

CandiceMariePratt · 21/06/2011 21:14

I know 1 baby Edith, lovely name

itsohsoquiet · 21/06/2011 22:11

It's my late grandmother's name so I'm a bit biased.
She was often called Edie which I love and think is nice as a name on its own if you like it.

itsohsoquiet · 21/06/2011 22:14

IBy the way I'm in East Anglia and I've never met another Edith.

vigglewiggle · 21/06/2011 22:29

I think it is one of those unusual names that people notice, so the perception is that it is quite popular, yet not many people will have met more than one!

takethatlady · 22/06/2011 15:45

It's not that popular. We're using it for a middle name for our LO, due on Sunday :) I should warn you though, we did think of using it for a first name but decided on Isobel, so popularity probably doesn't faze us that much!

PerryCombover · 22/06/2011 15:59

we have an Edie, short for Meredith

SloganLogan · 22/06/2011 21:45

Lovely :)

DitaVonCheese · 22/06/2011 23:42

Was supposed to be DD's name but my mum said I couldn't name her first grandchild after her MIL so she ended up as Edita instead - can still be Edie when the original karks it Grin

I have met maybe two in nearly 3 years if that helps.

Tigerbomb · 22/06/2011 23:52

Edith was my grandmothers name, it was usually shortened to Edie

I wanted to call my daughter Edith but unfortunately it wasn't a goer 20 years ago.

Ragged her husband was also called George Grin

DitaVonCheese · 23/06/2011 08:43

We recently stayed with a George and Edith on holiday (though she was Hungarian so actually Edite). Seems to be a popular combination! :)

BellaBearisWideAwake · 23/06/2011 08:46

I KNOW a George-and-Edith-elderly-couple also!!!

hester · 23/06/2011 08:49

I know one, but it is a family name. I think it's beautiful.

If you're worried about it getting popular, how about Ada?

I think Edith is beautiful.

katiepegram4 · 19/08/2015 12:42

We name our daughter Edith, Edie for short. It was a name me and my husband came up with together. All other girls name's we didn't agree with. I'm really love it, Edie is a cheeky name but Edith also sounds grown up, elegant and a little quirky. I'm hearing it more and more nowadays too but I don't think it will be too popular which is nice. It's not overly "pretty" but it is sweet. I didn't want a sickly pretty name, I think Edith has gumption but is delicate at the same time. My mum, dad and Nan turned their noses up when I told them it was an option for my unborn child, it kind of made me want to call her it more!! Grin but it's prob as its from their era. Anyway good luck with naming your child. It's a hard job Confused

eatmytoes888 · 19/08/2015 16:15

Edina nn Edie

Prefer Edina to Edith personally.

TidyDancer · 19/08/2015 16:21

This thread is from June 2011. I suspect the OP has probably named her child by now.
