What do you think? It's my dad's middle name- not my favourite in the world but I do like it & it would mean a lot to my dad & also honour our Scottish routes. Am a bit surprised it is not in top 200 names- I know it's not v fashionable but it's still a good strong name, right?

Scottish roots that would be, not routes!

Thanks Everlong. I think it's growing on me increasingly.

Anymore nicknames other than the obvious Al or Ali, anyone?

I really like Alistair. Great, strong name.
Annoyingly DP is harder to convince!

I love it, considering it, personally just can't decide which way to spell it, Alistair or Alastair. Seem to be used about equally as far as I can see.

Also lovely if it is a family name for you.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 20/06/2011 03:36

Brilliant name. Disqualified for me due to knobhead ex, but I love it generally.

manicinsomniac · 20/06/2011 09:34

I like it. Especially like Ali and, for that reason, I'd spell it Alistair.

I also teach an Alasdair which is pronounced pretty much identically.

katkitya · 20/06/2011 09:36

I have always liked it. Spelt with and i. I dont think it needs to be shortened. The two I know have never had it shortened.

birdofthenorth · 20/06/2011 10:54

Yes I actually had to get out my marriage certificate to double check which way it is spelt as Dad's middle name -who knew that archaic "Father's name" box would come in handy after all!

Glad it is spelt Alistair as it does lend itself a bit better to Ali as a nickname if he wants, but yes, I agree the full name is lovely for day to day use

Someone in RL just suggested Star as a potential nn for Alistair -us that a bit tenuous?

Lovely nameSmile

BlueChampagne · 20/06/2011 15:11

As it's the Scottish version of Alexander, you might get away with Sandy as a NN.

AandK · 20/06/2011 23:40

My 6' 2" jamie oliver lookalike brother is called alistair we very rarely shorten it to Ali only usually when we're both drunk and he shortens mine haha Xx

BadRoly · 20/06/2011 23:43

Not quite the same but my 8yo Alexander is known as Ally or Al and most assume he is an Alistair.
