Rohan - pronunciation?

I know this has been done before but have a specific question

Am expecting mixed race half indian / half white DC this week.
We both love the name Rohan if we have a boy.

With regards to pronunciation, would you pronounce it so that the Han is rhyming with Dan / Fan or as in rhyming with pun/gun

DH and i are concerned it would be pronounced with a harsh A (like ham) rather than a soft a (like the middle a of Adam) - would it be the bane of our DS's life to have to explain how it should be pronounced the indian way?

thanks!

I know a Rohan and everyone says Row-han (like ham but n not m IFSWIM).

If the Indian way is to say it like the English Rowan (Row-un) then I think you might have to explain it. The Rohan I know is half Indian too btw. That's how his mum says it.

There is a Karan at school (boy) and I was saying it "Kar-ann" until I heard an Indian teacher say "ku-run" so I have changed (tho it feels odd to say the A as U)

I suspect it was part of my dad's Lord of the Rings obsession can be both

AnayaLa · 10/06/2014 08:59

So silly. Rohan is a very old name with both Sanskrit/Hindi and Irish/Gaelic origins, the Sanskrit meaning is "one who takes the higher path" or " one who rises, ascends or achieves great heights." Note that Sanskrit is considered to be one of the oldest languages in the world (though like Latin no longer spoken) if not arguably, the oldest.

The Indian version is pronounced with the H.

It did not originate with the Lord of the Rings or become popular because of a clothing store brand. Do your research people!

The one I know is said Ro- harn

Tangoandcreditcards · 10/06/2014 09:09

I know 2. One of Sri Lankan descent and one of Irish.

Sri Lankan one pronounces his name Ro-han (like ham)
Irish one - Ro-wun

I think it's a lovely name and you can always correct pronunciation - I imagine my 2 Rohans have to do it occasionally. As with many names with ambiguous pronunciations people do usually ask or only get it wrong the first time!

softlysoftly · 10/06/2014 10:09

I know 2.

A female who is pronounced in the welsh way Rowan.

and a Nepalese male who is pronounced Row-Han (hard A).

I'm surprised the Indian way is soft A Are you sure about that?

Pebbles0934 · 10/06/2014 10:27

So do you pronounce the H or not? Is it the same as Rowan just spelt differently? I'm confused.....

RAFWife12 · 10/06/2014 12:23

If I saw it written as Rohan I would pronounce it Ro-Han.
It is one that may have to be corrected, but generally as soon as people hear the name pronounced correctly they will get it!

Nereida · 10/06/2014 17:59

I would initially pronounce it the same as Rowan, but if I was told it's Ro-han then I'd remember to use that in future.

WhispersOfWickedness · 10/06/2014 18:07

I knew a female Rohan at school, she pronounced it Ro-un.

qinglannn · 13/04/2020 19:01

my ex boyfriend is called rohan. his classmates always pronounced it row-ahn but i used to say it so it rhymes with fan. but then his friends corrected me. anyways issa cute name

Whatsyourflava · 13/04/2020 19:49

There’s a gazillion Rohan/Roman/Roan/Rowan’s these days. It’s the trendiest name there is. RoMan is the top fastest rising boys name so they can all get a bit muddled and merge into one name - “so is your child Ro_an with an M or a H or a W or a N?” (I work with children). Please no more of them!

Blursula · 13/04/2020 20:11

I would pronounce it like Rowan. Could you use an alternate spelling like Roan?

MikeUniformMike · 13/04/2020 20:24

Row Han

HedgehogTales · 14/04/2020 14:33

It's pronounced Ro as in row a boat, and hand like Attila the Hun.
But invariably gets screwed up by the non Indian native speakers

browzingss · 14/04/2020 22:14

I know a Rohan, pronounced as Rowan. He’s from Birmingham though so perhaps it could be an accent thing. He’s not Asian if relevant.
