Out of all the names, DH and I agree on almost none. Here are some that get combined approval. There are two I will not use. And two he refuses to. So, without biasing you, which, if any, would you go for? There isn't a pattern.
It may be worth noting that I am half Dutch, half Iranian; DH is English; but the baby may look slightly middle eastern.

Arthur
Edward (nn Ted)
Louis
Toby
Jacob (poss nn Jake)
Daniel
Laurence (nn Laurie)
Frederick (nn Freddie)
Lars

Arthur Edward and Jacob are my favourites

Starlingo · 08/06/2011 20:01

Thanks all. So, the only names we agree on are Jacob and Edward. (And I've never even seen Twilight.)
Any votes here? Or are they much of a muchness as far as you're concerned.

Arthur - don't like
Edward (nn Ted) - love
Louis - ok
Toby - like it
Jacob (poss nn Jake) -ok
Daniel -ok
Laurence (nn Laurie) - adore this: dd1 would have been it if a ds
Frederick (nn Freddie) - love Frederick but not Freddie
Lars - hate it

Cattleprod · 08/06/2011 20:06

Laurie gets my vote. I'd keep it as Laurie though, Laurence isn't that nice.

Lars would be a good name if it didn't rhyme with arse.

pooka · 08/06/2011 20:12

Prefer Edward to Jacob. By a long way. :)

Starlingo · 08/06/2011 20:18

Cattle - yep, is what my mum just said when I mentioned it. Well spotted...
Pooka, why do you prefer Edward - just interested to know the reason/s.
One issue I have with Edward is that I really don't like 'ed' or 'eddy' and realise that will probably happen.
Then again, is Jake a bit trash and Jay a bit hurray?

All are nice, but these are my comments:

Arthur
Edward (nn Ted)
Louis
Toby - like this
Jacob (poss nn Jake)
Daniel - a little too popular
Laurence (nn Laurie) - really like this one
Frederick (nn Freddie) - a little too popular
Lars - would suit a blond more than someone dark! Sounds scandinavian.

Starlingo · 08/06/2011 20:35

Also, what do you think of Nathaniel? (vs Jacob or Edward)

OP posts:
loobylu3 · 08/06/2011 21:13

Arthur- I like it but a bit 'on trend' at present.
Edward (nn Ted)- lovely strong classic. I also dislike Ed but you could use Ned or Ted
Louis- nice
Toby- okay prefer Tobias but not a favourite
Jacob (poss nn Jake)- Jacob is okay, dislike Jake.
Daniel- a good name but not a personal favourite
Laurence (nn Laurie)- really like Laurence.
Frederick (nn Freddie)- v nice.
Lars- no- doesn't sound strong and rhymes with arse!

I love Nathaniel!

Starlingo · 08/06/2011 21:16

Thanks Looby - sorry, I thought this thread had disapp. so have now asked the question again. Hum. Nathaniel is good. Nate?

OP posts:
radancer · 08/06/2011 21:23

Arthur Edward Frederick.

For simplicity's sake I'd go for Arthur Edward.
and don't bother with a nn

brightcopperkettles · 09/06/2011 03:02

I agree with the suggestion of Nathaniel and do also like Nate if you use a nn.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 09/06/2011 04:00

Arthur - makes me think of Only Fools and Horses, but I guess that's not a disqualifier
Edward (nn Ted) - far too popular, even before Twilight, but otherwise a great name
Louis - Not keen but I don't have a good reason why
Toby - love. I also love Tobias but I think Toby can stand alone (and I am anti-nickname-as-real-name usually)
Jacob (poss nn Jake) - boring, over-used, and Jake is naff
Laurence (nn Laurie) - Slightly 'weak' but nothing a good personality couldn't overcome
Frederick (nn Freddie) - I adore this with the heat of a million suns, but you can't have it, it's my boys name
Lars - too foreign unless you are
Nathaniel - great, use this.

mathanxiety · 09/06/2011 04:25

Arthur -- dislike, too old mannish, a fad
Edward (nn Ted) -- too much of a fad (Twilight), though a very nice name
Louis -- very nice
Toby -- prefer Tobias with Toby as a possible nn; Toby reminds me of a cat I once knew
Jacob (poss nn Jake) -- there are thousands and thousands of Jacobs and Jakes. It's nice but very popular
Daniel -- lovely, I see no drawbacks here, very international
Laurence (nn Laurie) -- I think Laurie sounds very feminine and no matter how much you may want to use Laurie, there will be people who insist on 'Larry'
Frederick (nn Freddie) -- nice; would be a good 'international' name
Lars -- sounds too much like 'lard'

So it's Louis, Daniel and Frederick, with Tobias instead of Toby. I love Nathaniel too, and the nn Nat (as in King Cole)

nooka · 09/06/2011 06:25

They seem a bit mainstream to me (except for Lars), which seems a pity as with an mixed cultural heritage surely you could pick all sorts of interesting names :)

Jacob and Edward in particular are likely to be very popular (there's another Twilight movie later this year).

I like Laurence, and I've only ever heard Larry as a nn in North America.

hellokitty123 · 09/06/2011 09:18

I agree - with your Dutch/Iranian heritage there are bound to be many much more interesting and culturally relevant names than Edward and Jacob, both of which are already used by thousands of little boys in the UK...

ceeceeanne · 09/06/2011 16:47

love Arthur
Leonard rather than Laurance
Clement rather than Lars

mathanxiety · 09/06/2011 23:14

I agree with Nooka too. Why choose a wallpaper name?

sunnydelight · 10/06/2011 08:08

I LOVE Laurence. Otherwise Louie, Toby and Daniel are nice. I really dislike Freddie which is unfortunate as that is my nephew's name Blush

missmiss · 10/06/2011 08:21

Arthur, Edward, Frederick, Lars. I find the others dull.

DoctorX · 11/06/2011 08:41

Here's what I think, best to be honest when it comes to these matters...

Arthur - too old fashioned
Edward (nn Ted) - Edward is a great name, not so keen on Ted
Louis - also great, especially if the surname is long
Toby - sounds like the name of an arrogant city banker
Jacob (poss nn Jake) - really good name. Love Jack too
Daniel - great name, though nearly every Daniel I met said something about not liking their name
Laurence (nn Laurie) - really great name. My best friend called her son Lawrence
Frederick (nn Freddie) - yes, but no to Freddie.
Lars - Too many Scandinavian filmmakers are called Lars

Grandhighpoohba · 11/06/2011 08:57

I am married to a Lars, no one pronounces it to rhyme with arse! It's more of a Laaarz sound, rhymes with Cars. The Lard thing hadn't ever occurred to me either, I don't think anyone has ever said this to DH. The one comment he gets is people always ask where he is from. And the Scandinavian filmmaker thing is true. Grin

Nightstar · 11/06/2011 13:48

I think they are all very good names - though i would avoid Jacob and Edward what with Twilight being so popular right now!

My favourite is Arthur - King of the Brittons!
