stuck on Jacob/Jake

What comes to mind when you hear the name Jacob?
And/or when you hear the name Jake?
Do you think these names are found cross all social/economic/religious groups?
Or does each shout something (possibly something different for each) when you hear it?
And what do you think of the nickname Jay? Jago?
Cheers!

We all have names that we just don't like, for no real reason. Jacob is one of mine. It subconsciously makes me think of crackers & Jake the Peg.

sunshinebehindeverycloud · 07/06/2011 11:46

Not keen on Jay or Jago but LOVE the name Jacob and nn Jake - all the Jake's I've ever known have been adorable.

Deevo · 07/06/2011 12:26

Hey Baguette - trouble is, something neg comes into my mind with almost every name I've mooted.
For e.g. in response to some of my other ideas - Benedict (always loved, but bendy dick, or so I've newly discovered; and/or ponce). Frederick - one of P.G. Wodehouse's twerps (and what if he can't say his Rs?). Tom - peeping Tom or that awful bloke out of the Good Life. Tobias - please kick my head in. And on it goes.
So Baguette: question - what is your fave boys name?

me and OH talked about Jacob if this bumps a boy but i find Jacob too pretentious and Jake a bit plain and chavvy. loved jacob its a gorgeous name and jakes my OHs dads name so we thought we were onto a winner :(

Deevo · 07/06/2011 13:01

Super - that's a shame. I think it's a lovely name - reckon it will have lots of nickname potential too. Is so tricky you see the name as A or Z (depending on whether Jacob or jake). I just want a name that won't label him as this or that but just let him be.
I had never ever thought of Jake as plain. Jake Chapman, Jake Gyllenhaal (actually a Jacob). etc. In fact, like some of the above have said, all the cool kids seem to be Jake.
If anyone has any other ideas then that'd be good. And I still want to know Bag's top name :).

even as someone mentioned the middle ground i.e jakie is an alkie term in scotland i do love jacob but just couldnt bring myself to say it its just too froofy for my liking:(

poppydaisy · 07/06/2011 14:00

I don't like Jake, I'm afraid. And there's a good chance that Jacob will end up as Jake, so personally I wouldn't choose it.

Deevo · 07/06/2011 19:03

So Super and poppy, have you got any other good boys' names up your sleeve? That can cross all social classes and won't locate the child. E.g. a friend was almost called Percy and thanks the sweet loooord that, at the last moment, his parents called him Mark instead.
To me, almost all boys' names either sound froofy :) or a bit y'know to me - so Lucas sounds try-hard (and a bit 2000) whereas, so I'm told, Luke is a bit Essex (erm, surely it's a bit New Testament, actually).
So I'm not sure any of this matters, although clearly it does (have been reading far too much about names).
Just want a name (like Jacob, I think) that will fit everywhere, give him access to whatever he fancies doing as a job, and won't cause teasing as a child. Oh and not in the top 10. Not too much to ask? :) .
Oh, and also - can you just give me a couple of girls' names too... tho I think it's a boy. Poppy - are you esp fond of poppy and daisy?

Deevo, taste is something very personal and I we (thankfully) all have different tastes. Wouldn't it be boring if we all loved the same names?

You also seem to have very different associatons to me e.g. you find Lucas 'try hard' and other names too 'froofy' Hmm.

I think most of the names I love will be too 'poncy' for you - I seem to love names that some mumsnetters find 'poncy'. And yes I am fond of Poppy and Daisy but for my guinea pigs Smile.

If you love Jacob or Jake by all means use it, but you did want our honest opinions Smile.

Jellykat · 07/06/2011 20:06

Deevo - There's no escape, every name will have some teaseability factor, DC are geniuses [sp?] at thinking of things, if that way inclined.

Plus as Poppy says, and you've seen here, there's no one name that everyone likes.

Have a shortlist, and once you've seen his/her little face, it'll kinda fit one Grin

superjobeespecs · 07/06/2011 22:37

iv had a night mare of a time choosing names for bump here we went thru meeeeeeeeeeeeellions i think i still have our list somewhere but every name OH choose was wrong and every name i liked was too chavvy too froofy lol i hate baby names its the thought that the poor blighter is going to have that name for life so you dont want to give it a common name i.e the top ten but also not an old old name we ended up with two lovely classic 'normal' names well the boys name is im still not sure on our girls name i think its too froofy but its a variant of my name and goes nice with the MIL name as a middle .. we went thru everything from adam to zach with frances jacob ryan mark and allan on the way!!! girls names we considered were natalie which i ended up hating erin which i still love but its too plain ffion but its too pretentious for my taste isla which bugged me absolutley shed loads of lovely names that just werent right for us or 'went with' DDs name and our surname like ive always loved the name maison but it doesnt go with my maiden name and it doesnt go with my married name its all personal opinion and what fits you and your family like my nephew is thomas which is again not to my taste and my baby niece is lucy so my sis stuck to the same kind of names my other niece is chloe she'd of been jack if she was a boy i actually love jack but OH doesnt like it lol

wow that has really rambled on im sorry :) x

Jellykat · 07/06/2011 23:09

What a wonderful post superjob!, you've summed up the dilemma for most 'parents to be' absolutely perfectly, and made me smile..

Good luck Smile

nooka · 08/06/2011 03:35

I like Jacob but I suspect that with yet another Twilight movie due out soon it is likely to be very popular. I don't associate either Jacob or Jake with any particular sociodemographic group.

Jay I think of a a nn for Jason, Jago to me is posh or bohemian (possibly both).

Deevo · 08/06/2011 10:07

Poppy - that's my dilemma. I want a name that everyone loves plus won't locate him socially. I guess it won't happen. Nooka - re posh and boh. Jago also has the old East End slums link. Mind you, had never thought of Jake as anything but arty/muso until I mentioned it to a few people.
This is so hard. Then again, maybe people see beyond the name and to the child too? Obv this is a bump so hard to think about that.
But my sister used a name that I'm not mad about, and I'm still not sure really suits the kid, but child is more than the sum total of this name. So, she's lovely despite the name. Not even sure if it works the other way around - e.g. does a lovely name makes you predisposed to think kindly about the child? Maybe Gabriel fits this (in part because, tho it's a beautiful name, I think it's perhaps a difficult name for a child to carry).
One last qu about Jacob, do people find the name as strongly religious, (I'm definitely not)?
Thanks for all these honest opinions, btw.

lool thanks jellykat this is still a heated subject in our house i think i may have vented a little too much but at least its out my system and at least 1 person understood my ramblings Grin OH just thought i was hormonally challenged Blush

poppydaisy · 08/06/2011 11:18

"I want a name that everyone loves"

That will never happen Grin. And thank goodness as it would be very dull if we all chose the same names for our children !!

mumoftoomany · 08/06/2011 11:49

I don't like Jacob or Jake, I'm afraid.

I do like Jago though - as a standalone name.

midnightexpress · 08/06/2011 12:00

I have one - he prefers Jacob to Jake. We use both and also just J, but I'm wary of calling him Jake in public because we're in Scotland (see comments above). It is quite popular though, if that bothers you. I know at least 3 others. Interestingly, lots of his friends seem to call him 'Jacome' for some reason (he's 4). He tells me he just says 'I'm not listening' because he doesn't like it.

Mumtothreelittlebeauties · 17/08/2016 08:04

I have an Oscar and a Saffi and now we have a baby boy who we need to name!
Considerations are
Tobin
Jacob
Quinn

What do you think and any other considerations please
