Is Skarloey a real name?

A friend is expecting her first DS and is talking about calling him Skarloey. The only Skarloey I've ever heard of is a friend of Thomas the Tank Engine. Don't want to judge other people's choices but can someone tell me whether it is considered a "real" name?

err no, its a fictional character in TtTE. Confused

Pregnancy hormones gone mental mad.

TabithaTwitchet · 03/06/2011 13:22

No, not a real name. In fact in the original Thomas the Tank stories, it is the (completely fictional) name of a station and railway line, not just an engine.

Are you sure your friend isn't joking or trying to avoid telling you her real name choice?

saidthespiderwithahorridsmile · 03/06/2011 13:23

It's quite a nice-sounding word, I bet there are several children already sporting it

I teach an Anakin, it's no stranger than that imo

beanandspud · 03/06/2011 13:55

Tabitha It is quite possible that she is joking but she sounded fairly serious. I did wonder whether she thought it was a long version of Louis/Louey.

Oh her child will be so popular in reception class with all those little Thomas the Tank engine fans. If she has twin daughters later do suggest Annie and Clarabel. Or Mavis. I have a 2 yr old whose current behaviour could get him renamed Cranky.

winkle2 · 03/06/2011 14:17

LOVE Anakin!

squeak2392 · 03/06/2011 20:18

I've never heard of it, but I have no idea how to pn it. Looks like Skarly or Skarla, which sound okay (for a girl). I suppose I could accept Skarly pn on a boy.

Reenuh222 · 01/10/2016 22:19

Not even going to lie, Scarloey is my name.
I'm literally named after a fictional train lmfao

(My mum changed it from Skarloey to Scarloey for me).

Mybeardeddragonjustdied2016 · 01/10/2016 22:21

You poor thing!!

LivininaBox · 01/10/2016 22:21

I think it means something in welsh - like tree by the lake - it says in the TtTE book.

DesolateWaist · 01/10/2016 22:22

I think Balonz is a better idea.

katemess12 · 01/10/2016 23:14

Sounds like someone mashed Scarlett and Chloe/Zoe together.

outputgap · 01/10/2016 23:39

Can i also ask why is 'arry not Harry while the Thomas name experts are here? (Massive respect for the Thomas facts, by the way.)

JosephineMaynard · 01/10/2016 23:44

I've only ever come across it in Thomas the Tank Engine.

It's not a decoy name is it?

KatoPotato · 01/10/2016 23:53

BakewellTartAgain · 02/10/2016 00:01

BakewellTartAgain · 02/10/2016 00:02

LaContessaDiPlump · 02/10/2016 00:03

Is Skarloey a real name?
badtime · 02/10/2016 00:42

To be fair, saidthespider, Annakin is a real surname, with Anakin the sci-fi variant given-name spelling.

GiddyOnZackHunt · 02/10/2016 00:55

It's not actual Welsh Livin. On account of a k.
