Kitty?

I don't like the name Catherine particularly but DH and I both like Kitty - It was my great aunt's name and we were reminded of it yesterday at my grandmother's funeral, so emotions may be taking over.

We have dd Lydia, and are expecting ID twin girls. Our names were Heidi and Alice but now we're thinking about Heidi and Kitty. I've not met any children called Kitty so would like to judge reaction (please be gentle) Grin

You automatically get "hello so and so" said no matter what your name is? Our kitty has never had the pee taken out of her and, if she did she is well able to look after herself!!! I don't think it's a girly girl name at all. Yes the merchandise is annoying but it's also quite nice that you can have a set of pens or pj's with your name already on it!!

Kitty is on the up! Where I live I know a few!

Mollydoggerson · 05/06/2011 21:18

I think Kitty and Alice are both very pretty , I'm not gone on the other suggesttions - heidi etc.

How about Lydia, Kitty and Alice,

Or Sally instead of Heidi.

Kitty and Alice go very well together, lovely twin names.

Bunbaker · 05/06/2011 21:21

Here kitty, kitty. Here kitty, dinnertime!

That is what springs to mind when I see the name. I admit that I don't care for the name and have never come across it in RL.

baskingseals · 05/06/2011 21:55

i love the name Kitty.

i think it's cool

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 05/06/2011 23:39

I have friends whose daughters are Molly and Kitty, and are now beautiful 20 somethings. Kitty is a strong and independent young lady.

I don't like Heidi.

kitkatya · 05/06/2011 23:57

Kitty reminds me of that book Tipping the Velvet. It's a great, strong name. I wouldn't use a fuller version. I like Nancy as well but, Kitty and Alice go lovely together as twins names.

We're really not bothered by Kerry Katona's dd being Heidi - pretty sure none of my friends care about Kerry Katona and I don't think they'll confuse us, I'm not very like her. DH picked that name and it's set, it's whether to use Kitty Alice or Alice Kitty that we're struggling with.

Eliza was a possible middle name but I felt it was a bit too close to my twin sister's name Elizabeth (who died when we were babies) so would be upsetting for my parents. Do love it though.

"She'll also get sick to death of people saying 'hello kitty' then laughing at how clever/funny they are."

Don't think I've ever heard anyone ever say that to my DD (called Kitty). Neither have I ever heard anyone say "here kitty kitty, kitty."

In fact, I've never heard anyone tease her about her name, it has just always been accepted as her name. That said, she does know a lot of children with some very odd names!

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 08/06/2011 15:54

PrincessScrumpy, have you thought that your parents might like the fact you have 'remembered' your sister by calling your DD Eliza? Even if that's not the real reason and you just like the name?

Teds77 · 08/06/2011 16:15

Congratulations on your twins!

I prefer Alice but I like Kitty and if you and your DH like Kitty then go for it.

If it was me then I'd go for Katherine but agree with you that there's no point using that if you don't like it.

Also, although I did think 'cat' when I starting reading this post, I've just realised that I've known a Kitty for ten years and at no point have I ever associated her or her name with cats! She was just Kitty and she just suited her name.

I'm not a huge fan of Heidi and I love Eliza but your reasons for using/not using these names make sense.

It's clear that people have different tastes on names but if I think that unless you are choosing names that are going to cause loads of bullying/confusion/upset etc. (which you're clearly not) you should go for the names that you and DH like best.

P.S. loving Lydia.

PrincessScrumpy · 08/06/2011 16:17

If I was having a singleton then I think I would but id twin girls is a bit too similar.

Yes, forgot you were having twins, sorry.

Ephiny · 08/06/2011 16:30

I think it's nice, very pretty name and I think it would suit an adult woman just as well as a young girl.

does make me think of Pride and Prejudice though especially as you already have a Lydia! As long as you don't call the other twin Mary, Elizabeth or Jane, you should be OK though :)

Kitty is lovely - you don't have to have te 'full version' on the birth certificate if you want her name to be Kitty - I know a Libby and an Ally (not Elizabeth or Alexandra) whose parents didn't want the traditional versions as names.

SloganLogan · 08/06/2011 19:46

TheSecondComing yes I agree.

You may hate Kate, Kathy etc, but she may prefer then. If you are going to call her Kitty from the start then what harm does it do to put Katherine etc on birth certificate? It's not going to do you any harm and you will always think of her as Kitty, but it gives her more options. You should think about your child living with the name as well as just names you like.

I have a good friend who is simply Jessie on her birth certificate. She curses the fact that her parents didn't just put her name down as Jessica so that she could use this now she is a bit older.
