Right, do your worst. What do you think of Ivy?

DH and I are having terrible trouble picking names for DC2. We don't know the sex (may start a separate thread for boys names!). DH likes nature (inc. flower) girls names, such as Daisy, Poppy, Meadow, Willow. I want something a little more serious, so have suggested Ivy as a not so flowery plant name, which he quite likes. But now I have reservations :(
I think my main issue is that I don't love it - I adore DS's name and I had hoped to love DC2's name too. Also my absolute favourite girls name has been rejected and I think I'm still trying to hold onto it :(
Middle name will be Winifred (my maternal grandmother) and surname is 3 syllables and begins with R.
So, what do you think? Am not bothered by popularity BTW. Any other more 'serious' planty/nature names out there that we might not have thought of?

I love Ivy too - much nice than Matilda.

Sorry - I don't like it :(

Can't you wait until you've just popped her out and say 'darling it just has to be Matilda' - not many men can say no at that time Grin

Lavitabellissima · 28/05/2011 22:25

I love Ivy & Iris, what about herby names?

Sage, Bay or Sorrell? fairly unisex too?

meditrina · 28/05/2011 22:26

I got a bit carried away, didn't I! I like a challenge, and am just sorry I've not come up with a good fit!

Looking a bit more laterally at a horticultural theme, how about Linnea (after Linnius, who set all the plant classifications)?

Tansy, Magnolia, Zinnia, Petunia (or Petula), Jasmine, (rose of) Sharon, Hyacinth?

Meditrina did you mention foxglove, Buttercup,Dandelion or tinkerbell? Grin Just kidding!

Herby names could include:
Cannabis
Weed
puff (the magic dragon as a middle name)
pot (plant for midle name if you want to combine the two)

How about weeds?
Dock (leaf)
Nettle (thats pretty)
Thistle
Bracon
Thorn

What about River...?

Your thread sounds like something I can imagine posting in a year or 2!! I LOVE our DS's name, and think it would drive me crazy were I not to love another name as much! But DH is determined that he is picking the next name, so I fear it will end up being a compromise, Grrrr!!

Anyway, we also like nature names. My favourite at the moment for a girl is Primrose! And we already have a River (mn)! And fwiw, I love Ivy too!!

CeliaDeBohun · 28/05/2011 22:42

I think Ivy is gorgeous. But if not, how about...

Elodie
Xanthe
Clover
Aurora

nearlytherenow · 28/05/2011 22:44

Heather?

razzlebathbone · 28/05/2011 23:20

Clo. Clover?

razzlebathbone · 28/05/2011 23:20

Sorry didn't mean to write Clo.

Clover?

catchafallingstar · 28/05/2011 23:25

Ivy is a lovely name.
Know a 3 year old with the name, so is suited to little girls.
Lovely and sweet.

jamjar11 · 29/05/2011 08:17

I too like Ivy but if you are still looking for other names what about Fleur or Flora?

LifeOfKate · 29/05/2011 19:38

Thanks for all your input :)

Nothing is leaping out at me :( DH has now informed me that he has gone off Ivy anyway, so looks like we are back to square one again Hmm

ChippingIn - That is definitely plan B Wink

Grin

If he comes back around to Ivy you could also go around singing

Tell him just to give up and agree to Matilda :)

Sylvaniasandwich · 30/05/2011 12:59

Flora is a lovely nature name I think. Or what about Fawn or Aurora?

PrincessScrumpy · 30/05/2011 13:06

I like Ivy but with Winifred it does sound a bit old lady-ish. I love Willow but surname is type of tree so sounds like we're naming trees!

Matilda will be one of our dts middle names. We love it but a close friend has a Matilda so we're now avoiding it as a main name. Makes me a bit sad though.

Wormshuffler · 30/05/2011 13:10

I do like Ivy, but the only thing that put's Me off is what an annoying plant it is!!!

Greenwing · 30/05/2011 16:06

If you want a name you really love, like your DS's, why not suggest to your nature loving husband that you stop limiting yourself to nature names? You are really limiting yourself!

Noah is Biblical Hebrew so why not look further afield for your new baby's name and maybe a classical, Biblical or any other name will turn out to be 'the one': Emma, Rebecca, ....

Or something that sounds a bit like your favourite Matilda - Martina, Marisa, Miriam, Marina, Mariella etc. Good luck!

AnotherMuesliPleaseBarman · 31/05/2011 21:17

I love Ivy - would consider for our next one if I could persuade DH
