I think they're all good... except I would spell it Vivienne. It's the way my mother spells it and I think it looks a little more elegant.

FannyNil · 25/05/2011 04:46

Would not recommend Margot (she might be nicknamed Maggot) but Margo. Like that a lot but 'tis the name of someone close to me. Also like Penelope (she would become Pen or Penny, though) and Vivian (who would become Viv or Vivi). If you don't mind the shortening, those are both good names IMHO

smother · 25/05/2011 09:25

I adore the name Margot - sounds very elegant and still relatively uncommon. Has the option for Maggie as a nn which is sweet on a young child. No need to ruin the spelling by using 'Margo'.

I also love Vivian although would spell Vivienne. Another elegant name with lovely nns.

Penelope. I don't like so much to be honest.

Margot is fantastic and Penelope is lovely too.

SloganLogan · 25/05/2011 10:44

Penelope is very pretty and I like Penny as nickname.

Margot is rather harsh and a bit faddy ATM.

Vivienne is OK but again a little harsh for my taste.

Pasiphae · 25/05/2011 10:59

Penelope is really lovely, but I do not like the obvious Penny nickname.
Margot is great, I see it as Queen Margot, nickname for Marguerite, but please keep the silent T.
Vivian as Vivien or Vivienne is fabulous. Has a vintage feel, a bit old glamour (thanks to Vivien Leigh), and lots of possible cute nicknames...

shoobidoo · 25/05/2011 11:15

Penelope is lovely. As is Vivian.

Margot sounds unfeminine and unless you pronounce it the French way (Marg-oh), it sounds even worse (Mar-gott) - I have a Dutch aunt called Margot pronounced like that.

nochy · 25/05/2011 11:54

How can anyone pronounce the t in Margot?

As Margot Asquith said to Jean Harlow.. "No, no, Jean. The t is silent as in Harlow"

Penelope is on my list. I love it.

shoobidoo · 25/05/2011 11:59

nochy, Margot is a French name and the French don't pronounce their 't's at the end of words (e.g. escargot). In most other languages (english, german, spanish) we DO pronounce the 't' in such words (e.g. bigot).

In Germany, Holland and Scandinavia Margot gets pronounced Mar-gott.

In England, I guess the 'posh' people want to pronouce it the French way Grin.

hannahsaunt · 25/05/2011 12:17

Vivienne. Was on our long list.

KikkiK · 25/05/2011 12:33

I love Vivian, and would spell it exactly like that.

Margot is a lovely name too. You have great taste!

Valinor · 25/05/2011 12:51

I really like all of them, but would probably use the Vivien or Vivienne spelling.

All 3 were on my list (esp Margot/Margaret) but sadly vetoed by DH. Would definitely use Vivienne, I think Vivian might be the boys spelling?

JamieAgain · 25/05/2011 18:32

I predicted these mid-century names would come back in. Have you seen the film Despicable Me? The girls in it are Margot, Enid and Agnes

Anyway, I love Margaret, but would choose Peggie, Maggie or Meg as a nn

Vivienne is nice (Brad and Angelina have a Vivienne)

Don't like Penelope

5DollarShake · 25/05/2011 20:40

Vivian is the male spelling. Vivienne is gorgeous.

Unless they were Dutch or German, no-one would seriously pronounce the 't' in Margot, would they? Hmm

loobylu3 · 25/05/2011 20:49

I love Vivienne (this spelling) and Penelope.

Margot is nice too but I prefer the above.

usualsuspect · 25/05/2011 20:50

very middle class

valiumbandwitch · 25/05/2011 22:44

Love them all. Would spell Vivien 'Vivien'.

Climbthewall · 25/05/2011 23:53

I know a girl named Margaux, i think that's a nicer spelling than margot

Climbthewall · 25/05/2011 23:54

*unless you mean for it to be pronounced margOT. In which case i very much dislike

BearBehavingBadly · 26/05/2011 01:02

Margot is lovely and so is Penelope.

shoobidoo · 26/05/2011 09:03

I agree, Margaux looks more feminine and also makes it clear that it should be pronounced the French way (and not Mar-got).

chandellina · 26/05/2011 10:23

definitely Margaux. How can anyone pronounce the T? I assure you - over and over and over and over ...
