What do you think of Bronte as a girl's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

I think of it as a surname so I'm not keen, sorry.

CoffeeIsMyFriend · 22/05/2011 17:09

I also think of it as Charlotte Bronte, not as a first name.

RickGhastley · 22/05/2011 17:10

V chavvy

BooBooGlass · 22/05/2011 17:17

It's a surname

bobbleheadnumberone · 22/05/2011 17:18

It sounds like the noise a donkey would make.

TheOnlyWayIsEnfield · 22/05/2011 17:23

I had a friend at school called Bronte. She was wonderful. I love the name. I think people you have known definitely influence your feelings about names. That's why I can't stand the name Max (shudders at memory of horrible child in my class who threw chairs) even though it is a lovely name.

tigercametotea · 22/05/2011 17:25

Brontosaurus.

deliakate · 22/05/2011 17:33

Using a surname as a Christian name isn't a nouveaux chavtastic thing , its at least as old as Victorian times..... even in Wuthering Heights itself, there are examples - Linton, Hindley etc

I think it is very pretty

LostInTransmogrification · 22/05/2011 17:37

Sounds like a dinosaur, unfortunate unless the child is very slender! Sorry!

shushpenfold · 22/05/2011 17:38

Fab author.

Pancakeflipper · 22/05/2011 17:40

Not with a Yorkshire accent, sounds you like are calling a dinosaur.
I love the Bronte sisters. But not as a first name.

Bluebell123 · 22/05/2011 17:43

chavtastic mother at school used to turn up with long peroxide hair, in heels and leopard print leggings to pick up her Bronte. Hideous association in my mind, sorry

Pancakeflipper · 22/05/2011 17:47

Did she yell "Brunti! Get ere Brunti." ?

TheHappyCamper · 22/05/2011 18:54

I teach a Bronte (Bront-ee) and she's a delight! I will admit that when I got my register I dd think Hmm but upon meeting her I think it rather suits her.

...and I'm in Yokshire Wink

MamaLazarou · 22/05/2011 18:57

Pretentious.

AlpinePony · 22/05/2011 18:57

We'll always have Africa.

AlpinePony · 22/05/2011 18:58

Oh I've bummed that line right up - but am thinking Green Card with Andie McDowell and Gerard Depardieu.

porpoisefull · 22/05/2011 19:06

Just no. Unless you want your child to go through life with the nickname Brontesaurus.

BatFlattery · 22/05/2011 19:33

Brontesaurus, sorry...

devoncreamtea · 23/05/2011 12:52

love it. I've met one before. Her parents pronounced it 'bronty' rather than 'brontay', much better i think. it's kind of boho, in the way that Bridie and Betsy are.
