Guinevere

Not pregnant at the moment (am a regular poster name changed for privacy), as had a recent early miscarriage, but had been intending to ask opinion on the above name, and thought I would still do so all the same.

So. Opinions please on Guinevere. Please be brutally honest. Nick names would be, potentially, gwin/gwen. Welsh connection necessary would you say? I do have Welsh ancestry, but it is distant..

Any suggestions in a similar vein?

The thing that springs to my mind is Lancelot. Personally, I don't like the name but that's just my opinion - sorry.

The only "similar" names I can think of are Esmerelda or Gertrude Blush.

Clarenbald · 22/05/2011 01:31

I don't mind Gertrude, so much, but dh wouldn't at all.

Can I just add and check how people would pronounce the 'Guin' part. Would you say Gwin or Gwen? I think both are acceptable, but suspect the latter is used more currently?

I say 'Gwin'
I really like it, very pretty.

TeamLemon · 22/05/2011 04:41

I say Gwin. It's only that bloody Merlin show that's shortened it to Gwen.

In an Arthurian vein:
Elayne
Branwen
Enide/ Enyd
Graine/Igraine (also spelt with a y)
Gaenor or Wenhaver (variants of Guinevere)
Gwendolen
Alba/Albiona
Helsin
Isolde/Ysolde
Iblis
Luned (pron. Leen-ed)
Lynelle/Lynette/Lynessa
Nineve (Lady of the Lake, also root of Vivian)
Morgawse
Tryamon (fairy princess)

CountBapula · 22/05/2011 05:11

Genevieve?

Converse · 22/05/2011 10:24

How about Jennifer? It's a Cornish variant of Guinevere.

sonniebonnie · 22/05/2011 10:53

Lovely, feminine and not overused. Great choice imo.

squeak2392 · 22/05/2011 11:00

I love Guinevere, but I really don't like the nn Guin. Love Gwen.

frantic51 · 22/05/2011 11:03

Oh oh oh! Just had to stick my head round the door and say I luuurrrve Guinevere! Wish I had thought of it when I had DDs. Met my first Guinevere three years ago, older sister to one of DD2's friends. She really suits the name too, all tall and willowy Grin She gets called Gwinny by her family and friends.

freesias · 22/05/2011 11:53

love it wish i'd been brave enough to use it .

if you love it go for it

ditavonteesed · 22/05/2011 12:01

I love it, but then I have a genevieve so I would. we shorten to genie.

DandyGilver · 22/05/2011 12:06

Lovely name. Need to be careful with surname though.

Eleanor/Elinor seems on the same lines to me.

Or Morgan.

Clarenbald · 22/05/2011 12:48

Thank you, and for the suggestions. Interesting list especially, Teamlemon.

Ah, does Merlin programme use nick name Gwen

I have only heard a couple of people use Gwen-evere pronunciation for the whole name, but they have Welsh connections, so are perhaps harking back to earlier Welsh version/spelling?

sonniebonnie · 22/05/2011 14:16

Morgan on the same lines as Guinevere Hmm?

Folk · 22/05/2011 14:20

Vivienne / Vivian is from Arthurian legend and is a very pretty name.

bobbleheadnumberone · 22/05/2011 19:22

Morgan Le Fay/Morgaine?

I really like it, you could always spell it Gwenhwyfar :O
