Hey all, I have 5wks left till my baby girl is born. I thought we had her name sorted but now my OH has changed his mind but come up with nothing else. We had decided on Alice Josephine but would just be Alice. I am stuck on it as I think its pretty and my nan was named it. Does anyone have any other suggestions taking into consideration I am tired of the same old ones that I keep finding when looking on name websites.
Appreciate any help.
Thank u.xxx

Would your OH prefer the name spelt Alys? I'm not sure why, but I do - it's a different name almost.

How about Eloise?

birchykel · 19/05/2011 21:32

I like that spelling its very nice. My OH is concerned because our surname is Wells so when you say Alice Wells he thinks it sounds like Alice swells.....which I can see his point.

How about just flippin the names around? Josephine Alice is lovely.

freesias · 19/05/2011 21:57

would you consider josephine alice . josephine is lovely

althea
alethea
alison possibly a bit dated but known as alice
ailish alice in gaelic

would your dh consider calling her alice jo to avoid the alice swells problem
or and i know hyphenated names are despised on mumsnet maybe in this case it might be an option and could possibly work
eg alice-anne josephine
alice-ruth josephine
alice-hope "
alice -joy "
alice -faith
alice -june "

thirtysomething · 19/05/2011 22:01

Alicia?
Ailsa?

Both go well with your surname (and I think Alice scans fine with it too!)

Other suggestions in similar vein:
Tess
harriet
May/Maya
Elena
Hannah
Esther
Freya
Felicity
Anna
Amelia
Laura/Lauren
Sophie/Sophia
Imogen
Susannah
Lydia
Matilda (Tilly)

valiumbandwitch · 19/05/2011 22:19

oh yeah, i see his point too!

What about Celia. That has the same letters in it as Alice !

Josephine Alice with Posy as a nn?

birchykel · 19/05/2011 22:21

Flipping the name around I may consider, but I do like the hyphenated idea even though lots of people frown at this hee hee. I also like Ailish so will have a think.
Anymore ideas please please keep them coming.

Josephine Alice is lovely.

Or, I actually rather like 'The Baby Girl With No Name', as in your thread title. It has quite a nice ring to it.

Thanks for replies, we have spoke a lot today about it. My OH likes Alice - Jo although still thinks its mouthful....don't see how. He also like elsie which is nice but I just feel that Alice is the right name....prob sounds weird but it just feels right. I don't mind calling her Alice-Jo Wells. Any thoughts on that ladies? Xxx

It does have a nice ring to it and goes well with your surname. It would be pretty much unique too.

You've probably thought of it already but what about Alyssa/Alissa? Sounds very similar to Alice but cuts out the "swells" sound Grin.

zippylou · 21/05/2011 19:59

i love alice-had it as an option for my second daughter as well as laura-beth, leah and olivia, Alesha/alicia is gud too-still similar to alice

Converse · 21/05/2011 20:02

Prefer Alice to Alice-Jo.

Alice and Josephine are both lovely. I think Alice is fine with your surname.

MakeAnotherCuppa · 21/05/2011 22:09

Eden
Elsie
Betsy
Mable

All sound lovely with Alice as middle name

mathanxiety · 22/05/2011 00:28

Ailish is not Alice in Irish (don't know about Scots Gaelic). It's Elizabeth.

freesias · 22/05/2011 10:11

mathanxiety both the oxford and penguin dictionary of baby names state that Ailish is the irish /gaelic equivalent of Alice while Eilis is the equivalent of Elizabeth .

DarlaDoll · 22/05/2011 20:29

Alicia Josephine or Alyssa Josephine perhaps

mathanxiety · 22/05/2011 21:11

Ailish isn't an Irish spelling. It's an anglicisation of Eilis (pronounced Eye-lish or Ail-ish depending on your accent).

freesias · 22/05/2011 21:19

it may be an anglicisation but is listed in most name books and www.babynamesofireland.com as an irish version of alice

mathanxiety · 22/05/2011 23:25

How crazy is that...

freesias · 23/05/2011 09:01

mathanxiety i was surprised too ,i grew up in ireland and always it was eilis for elizabeth . it was while we were considering a name for dd4 that we noticed that ailis /ailish was considered a form of alice and as alice had been on my shortlist it stuck in the mind . unfortunately dh vetoed all three .

birchykel · 24/05/2011 11:01
