Definitive opinions on Leah

My DH loves it, says anything else would be a compromise for him (not in an arsey way, that's just a fact). I like it but can't be completely sold just yet. Have had nothing but good feedback in RL. Surname is Friedmann.

Thanks

How do you pronounce it - Layah or Lee-ah? I know a German girl called Lea, pronounced Leh-ah, which is nice imo.

HarderToKidnap · 18/05/2011 11:15

Lee-ah. I prefer Layah but can't be doing with the correcting people all the time.

I love it. DN is named Leah.

Mumwithadragontattoo · 18/05/2011 11:43

I like it but you do have to be sure too.

DialMforMummy · 18/05/2011 12:21

love it

bibbitybobbityhat · 18/05/2011 12:23

Do you want honest opinions?

I am generally very supportive on baby names but Leah is just one name I cannot like. It makes me think of leer and yeah for some reason.

What about Lydia?

Ihavewelliesbuttheyrenotgreen · 18/05/2011 12:25

I like the sound and look of it and like the fact that it suits a child/teenager/adult. Not so keen on the meaning and the story behind it. I think it means something to do with suffering and in the bible Leah is the 'ugly sister' that Jacob has to marry before he is allowed to marry Rachel who he loves. But if this doesn't bother you I would go for it.

ILoveDrKarl · 18/05/2011 12:29

Hate it. Sorry! Reminds me of childhood as quite a few kids in my primary school called Leah or Leanne or Leigh. (80s NI) Never really liked many "L" names as a result - sounds quite rough to me.

ClipArt · 18/05/2011 12:47

I like it.

HarderToKidnap · 18/05/2011 12:50

Thanks for opinions everyone, really appreciate it! Wellies, in our religion Leah the woman is respected and loved as a founding mother of our people, so nothing but good connotations as far as that is concerned.

I do also like Lydia but it's DHs aunt and there absolutely will be some sort of family weirdness on his side if we call her Lydia.

LetThereBeRock · 18/05/2011 12:57

Personally I hate it. It's not an attractive name imho.
I immediately thought 'Betts' when I read it,but I'm a 90s kid,and it won't be an issue for anyone now.

KittyBigglesworth · 18/05/2011 13:23

I don't like it at all either. It does have rough connotations. I prefer Lydia or possibly Lara.

daisybear · 18/05/2011 13:32

I don't like it either...sorry

leah/leigh's i associate with been 'rough' too. I also don't like Lee for a boy for same reasons.

WowOoo · 18/05/2011 13:35

I love it and the spelling you're going for.

I also think Lydia is lovely. I'd never really thought of it before. i know one and she's fab.

MelinaM · 18/05/2011 13:48

I don't like it either I'm afraid, Lydia is lovely thoughSmile

AvonCallingBarksdale · 18/05/2011 13:51

I'm afraid it's one of not that many names that I really dislike. Sorry. Have seen it spelt Lia before, which I marginally prefer. I like Lydia too, although when I voiced that before DD was born, someone said, "as in Chlamydia?"
Leah just sounds a bit rough and I always think of Leah Betts.

olddeuteronomy · 19/05/2011 13:17

I like it, do not find it 'rough' at all, unlike Lee/Leanne. Know one who certainly is not. I personally would have been put off only by the bible story but if it has a different meaning for you that is fine. Leah Friedmann sounds lovely.

girlscout · 19/05/2011 13:30

The only leah i know is lovely, but the name is a bit meah, maybe its the lear thing maybe its a name thats become popular ,dont know. Anyway, you like it so thats what matters.

It's ok but I much prefer Thea (short for Althea?) or Lydia.

clivesummer · 19/05/2011 15:26

I love it. Do not agree with the 'rough' connotations , think the exact opposite in fact. It is my DD's middle name as a compromise as DP didn't want it as her first name.

pjani · 19/05/2011 15:43

I like it and it goes well with your surname.

deliakate · 19/05/2011 18:12

It does go well with your surname. It sounds a bit too much like a verb to me tho eg. I leer, you leer, she leers......

SwedishEdith · 20/05/2011 00:04

Goes with your surname but I don't like it. Or rather, it's just a bit nothing. It does just sound like all the Lee/Lia/Leigh names to me - which is unfair but there you go

oohlaalaa · 20/05/2011 12:02

I like it, I know a very lovely Leah, who is a dentist.
