What do you think of Bartholomew?

What do you think of Bartholomew as a boy's name? I think it's sweet and have heard it shortened to Ollie which might be easier to live with as a nn than Bart!

ollie is nice.

Batholomew should be nice in practice, but i know of too many medical centres and streets called batholomew. and of course, the Simpsons, how do you feel about Bart?

Vicar - Yes I think it's the Bart thing that would put me off. That's why I was thinking Ollie for short instead but guess it would be difficult to stop people using Bart.

MDS - thanks - I'm glad I'm not the only one.

Love Bartholomew, but absolutely abhor the nn Bart too, Barth is an option mw thinksSmile

Mumwithadragontattoo · 18/05/2011 10:20

Melina - thanks I think I agree with you. Barth might work but sounds a bit like Bath (especially around here!).

I like it but wouldn't be brave enough to use it. I think you would struggle to avoid him being called Bart though.

ClipArt · 18/05/2011 10:41

It's OK, not keen on Bart though.

oohlaalaa · 18/05/2011 10:43

The Simpsons with Bart, and pretentious with Bartholomew

upahill · 18/05/2011 10:45

I think it is dreadful and I would picture a bald old pretentious chap.

slartybartfast · 18/05/2011 10:45

you coudl shorten oliver to ollie,
that would be simpler.

not keen on bartholomew

bart is ok

It's too long to be practical as a full name, and the shortenings are either Simpsonny or the same as the number 1 boys name at the moment.

bigbluebump · 18/05/2011 11:04

I like Bartholomew, but shortening to Ollie would be a shame as there are SO many Olivers/Ollies out there already. How about Tolly as a nickname - thats cute and there aren't as many of them already?

Mumwithadragontattoo · 18/05/2011 11:31

Thanks everyone! Seems like it's split down the middle. I do like the idea of Tolly as a nn though.

Am also thinking of Benjamin which is similar but obviously more popular...

No! It's truly awful and very "trying too hard"

babyincubator · 18/05/2011 12:46

Love Bartholomew - also love Benjamin (name of my DS - often called Benji). If I have another DS, am tempted to go with Bartholomew - nn to be Barty but then that would sound silly - Benji and Barty...

belgo · 18/05/2011 12:46

I like it. And Benedict.

BadBagel · 18/05/2011 12:53

I like it, but then I am from Holland where Bart is a very common name and I like Bart Simpson :)

Barth sounds awful, Tolly sounds comical.

bigbluebump · 18/05/2011 12:56

Bartholomew, nickname Tolly is much nicer and less widely used than either Ollie or Ben, both of which are very widely used.

Mumwithadragontattoo · 18/05/2011 18:36

Thanks for everyone's opinions. I'm still not sure about it. Benedict is good option though...
