We already have Daisy and Charlie, dp has agreed i can have Willow if its a girl but he is dead set on Jack for a boy, he only really likes traditional names and i do like Jack my only reservation is its always at the top of the most common names, but I only know 1 other jack distantly!
DD also wants jack for a boy, my other choices are Joey, James, Josef, Reuben.
All the other names we like we already know one closely,
Should i just ignore that Jack is apperantly so common?
Im secretly sure its a girl anyway!!

If you like the name, use it. I have a Jack and couldn't give a flying one whether other people use it/like it or not.

thisisyesterday · 17/05/2011 16:05

tbf Daisy and Charlie are very popular too, so i wouldn't worry that much about it.

i don't know that many Jacks in real life

pilates · 17/05/2011 16:32

Go for it, its one of my favourite boy names.

Ignore the negative comments - its a good strong classic name, which will suit all ages.

Personally I'm not keen on Jack, but if you like it then use it!

Or you could have John, with Jack as nickname.

I also like James and Reuben from your list.

Lambskin · 17/05/2011 17:22

I also have a Jack. He's 17 and loves his name, it's always suited him. It's classic but cool, go for it!

It's the first (and possibly the most important) gift you'll give him so make it one you like.

It is very popular and I would never use such a popular name personally. I also think it is totally overrated as a name, it is quite boring.

If you're worried about the popularity factor how about Joaquin or Jacques, and using Jack as a nn?

Mrsfluff · 17/05/2011 17:39

Ooh I like Jedediah Grin

If you like Jack that is all that matters.

ACremeEggInBothCheeksMakeUGrin · 17/05/2011 17:42

I have a Jack, and don't know any others at the moment. Dh did want Daniel as the middle name Hmm but I managed to get him to have it as a second middle name.

If you and dh like it, that's all that matters.

startail · 17/05/2011 20:27

Jack or James (which is what I'd have used had I had a DS)
Jack probably works best with the other two.
I think that simple boys names generally work best, its terribly easy to seem either rather posh or quite the opposite if you are not very careful. Oh and don't go for a wacky second name. DH has the equivalent of been called after your great Aunt Gladys instead of her sister Alice. Every year they had to check full names for the register and every year he got teased.

neverlookback · 17/05/2011 22:28

haha madamdeathstare that made me laugh!!
It is cool and classic and suites all ages
cheers ladies x

I love Jack, had dd3 - few months ago, we live in NI and apparently Jack is really popular here but we don't know any, Hmm I have 2 dds (3&5) and there are no Jacks in their playgroups, primary school, gymnastics etc. I called dd2 the most popular name in the whole world ever apparently but again none in primary school classes or playgroup.

Sorry have to nick nay Russell, no way Jose, oh there's a name Grin

ClipArt · 17/05/2011 22:48

I'm assuming your surname isn't Frost or Robinson?

I'd avoid L as middle initial too as Jack L. is like jackal.

CherryDrops · 18/05/2011 14:22

I like Jack and think it goes with Daisy and Charlie very nicely. All friendly sounding names, I'd expect them to be nice children!

freesias · 18/05/2011 17:38

if you actually look at the statistics even the most popular names are still relatively uncommon .

for example there were 338,173 baby boys name in england and wales of these 7364 were named oliver if my maths is correct and it's probably dodgy

that is just over 2 in every 100

likewise for girls there were 5201 olivias out of 313,380 girls just under 2 in every 100 girls with the most popular name

so if you love the name go for it you could choose a less popular name which becomes the next big thing and then really regret not using jack.

i think goes well with your other dcs' names

freesias · 18/05/2011 18:22

ignore the above calculations it should have been

1 in 60 boys is oliver or
1 in 46 girls is olivia if that helps

apologies

Lonnie · 18/05/2011 18:22

Go for it its going down the list anyway not no 1

its a nice name and ggoes well with your other 2 kids names

neverlookback · 19/05/2011 13:44

aw thanks think we are dead set on Jack now for a boy! freesias thanks for the calculations!
it does go well with my other 2 ds'c names, they are lovely, both a bit crazy wild but lots of fun!!

What matters is that you, the parents, love the name. Personally I don't like the sound of Jack, it sounds very harsh to my ears. But who cares what I think - YOU've got to love your choice.

poppydaisy · 19/05/2011 14:12

Personally I find Jack overused and dull. But that doesn't mean you don't like it, but you did ask for our honest opinions Smile.
