Emily v Rose

Still have 15 weeks to go and are firmly in team yellow.

Right from day one we decided it would be Emily or Thomas.
We're still stuck with Thomas for a boy but since we've both been convinced it's a girl, Rose has snuck in there and I can't get it out of my head!! Hmm

We both feel like Rose might be too "out there" compared to our other choices which are safe but still classic. But I really love it and have been walking past people in the street thinking "would you suit the name Rose? or would you be Emily?"

I think people generally love the name (Rose) but would you actually use it / have you used it for your DD?

Both really nice names. I'm sure someone will come on here and say they are too popular but I think they are lovely. Think if I had to choose it would be Rose.

ShimmeryPixie · 16/05/2011 12:52

I would choose Rose too. But then I have an aversion to names ending with "eee" sounds.

Loads of Roses around.

Love, Emily, much prefer it. It wins hands down in my book.

MelinaM · 16/05/2011 13:10

Both lovely names, but I'd choose Rose, it's beautiful and can't be shortened to Em /Emmy or MillySmile

wetwelly · 16/05/2011 13:12

Rose, 100% definitely. I don't see it as 'out there' at all. It's just as classic as Emily and much prettier and far far far less common. There are lots of Roses's as middle names but I only know one 'Rose' as a first name and I four children so know lots and lots of little people!!

diddl · 16/05/2011 13:13

Emily Rose is lovely.

I much prefer Emily & think of Rose as an old ladies name tbh.

innerstrength · 16/05/2011 13:14

Definitely Rose. Emily will have many many other Emily's around at school and elsewhere. So will Thomas I'm afraid.

"We both feel like Rose might be too "out there""

Really? It is a lovely classic well known name imo. Not as overused as some others - lovley.

But I agree withe others that both Emily and Thomas are very very polular and have been in the top 10 for a number of years. I'd avoid them for that reason but of course the popularity may not bother you Smile.

Annie456 · 16/05/2011 13:48

Thanks for your thoughts so far.

I'm not keen on Emily Rose as I feel it sounds like the name of a ship! Also, I think Rose is too pretty to use as a MN and if I didn't use it this time i'd like to keep it in case I have another DD...

I was only suggesting that Rose was "out there" when you consider that my other names are both top 10 and Rose isn't a name you hear every day.

I'm not a fan of the longer "Rose" names so it would just be simply, Rose. I guess because I don't know any other Roses I can't see how it would suit my DD as a child / adult and it makes it difficult.

"I guess because I don't know any other Roses I can't see how it would suit my DD as a child / adult and it makes it difficult."

But your dd will grow into her name, and isn't it much nicer for her to have a more unique name than one that is already used by many others?

diddl · 16/05/2011 14:15

TBH, if you like it, use it!

I think it is perhaps not so popular as a first name.

It doesn´t really matter what others think, & although it wouldn´t be my choice, & I do think of it as an "old" name, I also don´t think that it a horrible name.

(I do like Rosa thoughConfused)

Rose

Bucharest · 17/05/2011 13:02

Rose would be lovely as a first name. It's a default middle name, and as a middle name it's boring, but much underused as a first name.

Emily, aside from there being 9 in every class (although thankfully it seems to have passed its peak) always sounds drippy to me. Emma is lovely though, and very classy. Also as most Emmas are in their 20s and 30s is due a revival. Emily Rose sounds like a Steven King child.

ggirl · 17/05/2011 13:05

yup used Rose for my dd
she's 19 now and called roley/roro by her friends
not many her age at all
but getting popular i think judging by mn threads
