Rhomany for a girl?

I met a little girl with this name and really liked it. No idea about spelling so this is a guess. (The "o" was pronounced as in "soft" not as in "Roman".) WDYT?

Are you sure it wasn't Romilly?

snowshoes · 10/05/2011 12:28

100% positive. I even asked to be sure I'd heard it right but didn't think to ask about spelling. I do like Romilly as well.

I'd think of Romany Gypsies and wonder if there was any connection.

DELHI · 10/05/2011 13:33

Not sure about it myself, sounds a bit made-up - it's not Romilly, and it's not Romany. Any DD with that name would have to spend a lot of time explaining, and spelling IMO.

DesertOrchid · 10/05/2011 13:46

I'm guessing this is someone mispronouncing Romany, tbh...

poppydaisy · 10/05/2011 13:48

I've not heard it before but I like the sound of it. I'd spell it Romany. Lovely and you could call her Roma as a nickname.

PorkChopSter · 10/05/2011 13:49

What Delhi said. Looks like a misspelling of Romany.

MelinaM · 10/05/2011 14:03

It certainly looks made up to me, I associate it with gypsies too! Romy and Romilly are far nicerSmile

grumpypants · 10/05/2011 14:05

oh god, it's tolomey all over again. just go with the expected spelling and pronounciation of names people.

seeker · 10/05/2011 14:05

Just better hope she never comes up against the significant % of people in this country who are prejudiced against travellers.

kerala · 10/05/2011 14:07

Sounds like a medical condition.

speakercorner · 10/05/2011 18:22

I used to know a Romany, and think it is a pretty name. Definitely lose the 'h' though.

I know an adult Romany - said more like Romm-any than Roh-many.

seeker · 10/05/2011 20:16

You can;t call somebody a word because it sounds "pretty". You have to think about the meaning and the impact on peopel hearing the name. Sadly, Romanies are standard targets for racists and bigots in this country in this country - really not a good idea for a name for a child.

SecretNutellaFix · 10/05/2011 20:17

I quite like the name, but definitely lose the "H"

Ihavewelliesbuttheyrenotgreen · 10/05/2011 20:42

I would associate it with gypsies, not that gypsies are neccessarily bad, but its a big connection for a child to carry around. Also no-one would be able to spell/say it first time.

mummissinghermind · 10/05/2011 20:52

I don't like it, Romana is an islamic/arab name which i think is beautiful.

But Rhomany, sorry thats awful.

snowshoes · 11/05/2011 11:28

thanks for the feedback. i so wish i had thought to ask the woman how she was spelling the name! i agree that it's probably kinder to kids to give them names that don't already have connotations.

I have a Romilly - and people frequently mishear/misremember it and call her Romany/Bromley/Romney etc.

Very irritating. Sorry, I've wandered off topic, but I would think it would be burdonsome to have Romany as a name for the reasons posted above.

shouldnotbehere · 13/05/2011 16:34

I immediately think that you have misspelt Romany, and think of Romany Gypsies.

Much prefer Romilly or Ramona

meadowlarks · 13/05/2011 18:12

Oh, I know a Romany. She's part Romany Gypsy. That spelling is stupid, though.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 13/05/2011 19:28

I love Ramona.

missmelo · 13/05/2011 19:45

I know a Romanie and she is Dutch but I don't think its a Dutch name. I'm not a huge fan, sorry :)

BendyBob · 13/05/2011 19:50

Or Romana.
