Is it Clemen- tyne or Clemen- teen? I think it is a pretty name written down, but unsure on pronunciation. Thanks.

I would say Clemen-tyne. Like the fruit. But it might be pronounced the other way when it is a name.

pooka · 09/05/2011 07:35

Clementyne.

ElsieR · 09/05/2011 07:47

Clement-een if you want it French style

DriverDan · 09/05/2011 07:49

I always read it as Clemen-teen, I think I'm in a minority though as everyone else on here and in rl seems to go with Clemen-tyne.

Strictly · 09/05/2011 10:22

The oranges are Clemen-tyne so I would say the name would be too.

SIL always joked when I wanted this name 'it's pronounced S-A-T-S-U-M-A' Wink

YouremindmeoftheBFP · 09/05/2011 10:25

I love this name. I would pronounce "tyne".

evamummy · 09/05/2011 10:28

Clemen-tyne in English, Clemen-teen in French and Clemen-teen-eh in German.

Valinor · 09/05/2011 11:22

I have a Clementine and we pronounce it teen.

Clementine is actually the French variant of Clementina and should therefore be pronounced Clemen-teen. Clememntine Churchill pronounced her name the teen way too.

LoopyLoopsBettyBoops · 09/05/2011 11:23

tyne, and it's a lovely name. :)

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 09/05/2011 11:25

teen
but then I am french,
but only heard it -teen in the UK too.

Tyne is for US as in the song.

I think most english people would say it -tyne.
But the clementines I have met pronounced it -teen, which is the nicer way IMHO.

mopsyflopsy · 09/05/2011 11:52

In English most people pronounce Clementine -tyne, just like Caroline.

In French both would be pronounced Caro-leen and Clemen-teen.

clearsaint · 09/05/2011 13:27

Marks place on thread. I need to know too, as this is on our list of favourites.

We intend to use the Clemen tyne pronunciation

Valinor · 09/05/2011 13:31

But if you use that argument mopsy then surely we should pronounce Christine as Chris-tyne?

pinkgirlythoughts · 09/05/2011 14:53

-tyne is a fruit, -teen is a name.
I always assumed this was just common knowledge, although on another thread on here a few weeks ago, almost everyone went for the -tyne pronunciation, so I might be in a minority!

Strictly · 09/05/2011 15:40

I can't believe how popular this name is becoming! So many threads on it and I'm meeting so many in real life, 4 babies in the last year Shock Everyone told me it was horrible and she's be 'Clammy Clemmy' or 'phlegmy Clemmie' but mainly people just said 'but it's a fruit?!' like I'd said I was considering 'pineapple' as a name, so I'm sad now it's rocketing in popularity :(

With the way it's said I think you'd get both pronounciations, you get both when people talk about the fruit so you'd get both with the name I guess.

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 09/05/2011 16:06

strickly it is the fruit which got name after the name, not the other way around (a priest named clement did the cross to have the fruit). If that make any difference Confused

DialsMavis · 09/05/2011 16:14

mine (DDs middle name) is tyne

JanMorrow · 09/05/2011 16:24

I say Clemen-teen. But I guess it's different for everyone, just pick the one you prefer!

Strictly · 09/05/2011 16:43

LMA but everyone knows the fruit! plus you know what children are like, it just all falls off the tongue... orange juice, satsuma, clammy, pleigmy :(

I'm in love with Clemency now, can be Clemmie still, but has a stunning meaning and isn't a fruit! It also feels a little more classic. Clementine seems to be exploding and I think will date... it's just like bit too much like Christine for me now.

ScousyFogarty · 09/05/2011 17:00

my lady gets upset over the new way of sayng Boadacia

Hedwig3 · 09/05/2011 17:03

It seems I may be on my own with the fruit pronunciation -

I say clementeen for the fruit so clementyne for the name

mopsyflopsy · 09/05/2011 18:31

Why can't the fruit and name have the same pronounciation, like Charlotte Potatoes, Anya Potatoes or Apple, Peaches etc. Clementine isn't any different and yes, the fruit is named after the name.

pooka · 09/05/2011 19:33

My cousin (late 20s) is clementyne.
