Help - Scottish girls' names - Jessie?

DP and I have just about decided on Jessie as the name for our first baby, due in August. It's pretty much the only name we both like so far, and it's one of my favourites, I also have a lovely relative with the name. Not short for Jessica (which we don't really like), just on its own - as far as I know it is often used as a 'free-standing' name in Scotland, though it can also be short for Jean/Janet.

We are still having doubts though - does anyone know of any other good Scottish girls' names, or have any recommendations for books where we might find some? I am Scottish though we live down under now. Thoughts on Jessie also appreciated.
Thanks!

My Scottish girl was supposed to be Fiona, but when she was born she was not. She was as the Irish midwife named her, the Scottish Helen. Helen is light, Helen is peace, Helen is the face that launched a thousand ships.

That was and still is herself, written in her very face, with its green eyes covered by glasses, its smattering of freckles, its milk white skin, its teeth grown in that will need braces. Her long, tall frame. Her thick, wavy chesnut brown hair, that goes streaks of gold and copper in the sun. It is foretold, he will hear her before he sees her, and the mantle of her hair has the colour and flow of late honey. Even now, she refuses to wear it up except for school and sport.

Have several names for you lassie, then see what she suits. Some will suit their name, you'll know that the second they are born.

Agree with the sentiment of your post 1more but I reckon those that posted About Senga being a 'chav' name may (like myself) remember the days in Scotland before the word chav/ned were common usage & girls of that ilk were referred to as 'sengas' for some reason. Senga was a common usage term when I was at high school to describe girls who went with a lot of boys or were always in trouble eg "do you know Donna? Oh yeah she's a real Senga isn't she?" - teenage girls can be so mean!. For that reason I honestly think not many people of my generation in Scotland would name their daughter Senga. It's not that the name sounds 'chav' whatever that means but that there is an historic connotation that a senga is a chav if that makes sense?

Love the name Jessie was my great grandmothers name, she was a Janet as was my grandmother (whose nn was Jenny).

Thanks Atomant. Sorry everyone, especially daimbardiva, I overreacted there, I seem to have become a bit of a grumpy bastard recently. Still think 'chav' is a class thing though and don't like it at all. I am the OP incidentally, thanks for your comments.

RueLaChesty · 12/05/2011 00:15

my all time favourite girls name is Fyfa but can't use it as our surname begins with F. :(

we have an ainslie and elizabeth and we quite liked Jessie for DD2. Don't know why we discarded it as a choice as its lovely. Maybe if there is ever a number 3.

Haud yer wheest, i'm intrigued to know your kids names if you don't mind telling them?

I really like Mirren and Ailish - how do you pronounce Mairead and Ealasaid?

OP posts:
xstitch · 12/05/2011 14:33

I love the name Mirren or (Muiranne). I don't personally like Senga it reminds me of someone I'd rather not be reminded of but that is very personal. Shona and Jessie do come from the same root. Personally if I used Katrina I would spell it Catriona.

haudyerwheesht · 12/05/2011 17:34

Mairead can be pronounced to rhyme with parade or (more scottish way) my-redt.

Ealasaid - aila-shay or aila-satch

Saltire · 12/05/2011 17:42

DS2 was going to be Eilidh, great name, still remains my favourite Grin.

I also like
Morven
isla/y
Seonaid (shona)

Saltire · 12/05/2011 17:44

With mirren I'd always think of the football team,Grin

JaxTellersOldLady · 12/05/2011 17:48

I dont like Jessie - because it reminds me of "awa' ye big Jessie!" sorry OP.

I know a couple of people (Scottish) called Senga, both lovely people but both hated their name... just saying.

Katrina/Catriona/Kathryn
Isla
Iona
Mairaed
Mhairi
Eilidh (spelling)

are my favourites

freerangeeggs · 13/05/2011 20:38

I have a friend called Senga. She's very quirky and arty and it's awesome on her.

Having said that I wouldn't recommend it :)

saffy85 · 14/05/2011 07:37

I love it. I had a great aunt Jessie who was a bit of a character and I'd love to add Jessie to my shortlist but can't really as DP has a cousin called Jessie and having a grandaughter and Great grandaughter both called Jessie would confuse DP's granny alot (she has dementia). Sad

MissingMySleep · 14/05/2011 07:41
